Biofeedback refers to the process of analyzing the different bodily functions of a person and quantifying them. This is a non-medical analysis and is general in nature. Each body function has a normal range specified, and should be maintained at the same, by a healthy person. Stress has an effect on not just any function in the human body, but affects many a level. Hence, by measuring the bodily functions of a person in real-time, and comparing them to the standard rates, it is possible to study how much havoc the stress is causing to the health of anyone. Such studies are a strong tool in making a person realize the health hazards he is subjected to, and more importantly, take measures to correct them.

Biofeedback is generated by quantifying physiological functions such as blood pressure, body temperature, heart beat rate, muscle tension etc. These are basic but vital indications of one’s physical well-being. On comparing the biofeedback with corresponding normal levels, one can understand what effects his doings has on his health, and if necessary make the corrective measures as soon as possible. When the body functions are monitored and maintained at normal regularly, any damage resulting from stress is minimized. Therefore, using biofeedback is an effective tool for stress relief. Generating biofeedback involves using various tools such as feedback thermometer, measuring muscle tension by electromyography, electrodermograph to study sweat glands, Capnometer to measure Carbon dioxide levels, pneumograph to check breathing rate etc.
