About U.S. Stock Market Holidays 2012

U.S. stock market marks nine days as holiday every year. These nine holidays are apart from the regular closing days, i.e. Saturdays and Sundays. Holidays of U.S. stock market are similar to the NYSE Holidays. Following are the terms and conditions of the holiday list of the stock market.

• The first day of the year, 1st January, is considered to be a holiday. According to the rules, if the holiday falls on Sunday, then the market remains closed on the next day, that is Monday, and when it falls on Saturday, the day before Saturday, i.e. Friday is considered to be a holiday. But if the New Year Day is Saturday then Friday is the last accounting day of the month as well as the year. Hence both Friday and Monday are considered working days. Hence in the year 2012, 2nd January will be observed holiday as 1st January is falling on Sunday.
• Then comes Dr. Martin Luther King day. It is the third Monday of January which is 16th January.
• The third Monday of February is President's day which is on 20th February.
• The Friday before Easter Sunday, is marked a holiday as Good Friday. It is on 6th April in 2012.
• The last Monday of May is considered off in the U.S. stock market and considered as Memorial day. It is falling on 28th May this year.
• 4th July is marked as the American Independence Day. The same rules of holidays, which are explained in the first point applies here too.
• The first Monday in September is marked as Labor Day. This year it is on 3rd September.
• Fourth Thursday of November is the Thanksgiving Day. This year it is falling on 22nd November.
• In the end, the most awaited festival of the year the 25th December, i.e. Christmas, is the last holiday of the year. It is falling on Tuesday in 2012.
• Apart from these holidays, the memorial of a president or an ex-president's death is also marked as holiday.
