US Open 2010: Day 5 Results
With play moving into day 5 of the US Open 2010, it seemed to be a better day for the higher ranked seeds, with just the solitary upset in the day's play...

Day 5 Results - Men's (Seeded Players)
The top seed, and also the man who is trying to win his first US Open title in 8 attempts, Rafael Nadal, was the prime attraction for the night, and he didn't disappoint, with a straight sets victory over Denis Istomin. The unseeded Istomin started off poorly against the top seed, but soon came into his element and gave Nadal a tough fight. Istomin pushed the second set into a tie break, but in the end it was the fact that he could not break the Spaniards serve that was his undoing. Nadal won the tie break (5) and though Istomin tried hard in the 3rd, it was tough going. Nadal did well to hold his serve throughout the match, and a break late in the 3rd set sealed the victory, and a ticket to the 3rd round. Both of Nadal's matches now have been tough, and though the French Open and Wimbledon champion has won in straight sets, they were closely fought sets that could have gone anyone's way. Of course, the fact that Nadal won is what differentiates him from the rest, as you have to make use of the opportunities to get to that number 1 position. Nadal, has however, never gone past the semis at the US Open, though this year is looking to be his best chance of doing just that.
Meanwhile, the number 4 seed, Andy Murray, had a contrasting win over Dustin Brown. A little lethargy in the first set was soon shaken off, and the next two sets were taken with relative ease, getting the Scot one round closer to realizing his dream of winning his first grand slam title. Dustin Brown, a Jamaican, (complete with the baggy shorts and dreadlocks, mismatched shoes, etc.) started well but could not match Murray's skills after a while. After going through a toughish 1st set, the number 4 took control of the match and finished off in ease. Murray is looking all set to prove to everyone that he is indeed capable of winning a slam, and truth be told, the US Open seems to be his best bet. Also, his great form is coinciding with the tournament, giving him a very realistic chance to win his first grand slam title. However, he will play Rafa in the semis, a fact that is looking more and more likely with each passing day, and that will be one hell of a match.
With most of the upsets already over with on the first 4 days of the US Open 2010, day 5 was relatively better for the seeds, with just the single seed not qualifying for the next round. 29th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber was the only seed on day 5 to not make it to the next round, and he lost in a 5 set thriller, to Gilles Simon. In a match that fluctuated both ways, it was Simon who came out on top and created the only upset of the day. Also noteworthy to mention was the unseeded Ryan Harrison's performance, who after winning against 15th seed Lbjuicic in the first round, could not out off unseeded Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second. It was a match that Harrison should have won but lost in 5 sets, including a last set tie break. The 220th ranked Harrison played some great tennis, and in the end, it was experience that cost him the match. However, at just 18 years of age, the US can expect great things in the future from Ryan Harrison.

Day 5 Results - Women's (Seeded Players)
In the women's event, it was seeds against seeds for the first time in the US Open 2010, and things went the way of the higher seeds, as expected. After the performance of top seed Caroline Wozniacki yesterday, it was the chance of the 2nd seed Kim Clijsters today. Clijsters was playing the 27th seed Petra Kvitova in her 3rd round match, and started off horribly. She lost the first 3 games to Kvitova and midway through the first set, with the score reading 0-3 in favor of Kvitova, the match had all the makings of a classic upset. However, seeing herself down 3-0 in the first set seemed to wake something up in the second seeded Clijsters, and she took control of the match, never allowing her opponent to win even a single game after that. Indeed, from 0-3 down, Clijsters won the first set 6-3, and the second set 6-0 to send home a completely disoriented Kvitova, who had no idea what happened after the 3rd game of the match. Clijsters, who in the end had an amazing match, lost the first 3 games, and then went on to win the next 12 games in a row. She is playing some great tennis and seems to be all ready for whatever the top seeded Wozniacki can throw at her.
In the midst of all the amazing games, let's not forget the 3rd seed, Venus Williams. Her last title at Flushing Meadows came in 2001, and since then she has been looking for that elusive US Open Singles Title. This year, in the absence of sister Serena, she stands a great chance to win the title, and showed in her 3rd round match that she was up to the task. Playing against unseeded Mandy Minella, Venus stomped her way to victory, allowing her opponent to win only a meager 3 games in the entire match. The 5th seeded Samantha Stosur also notched up an easy victory, and can prove to be a thorn in the sides of the top 3. The 6th seeded Francesca Schiavone, who won the French Open this year, is also looking to be on a collision course with the semis, and can be a deciding factor in who makes it to the last 4.
After the first 4 days, most of the seeds are already out of the US Open 2010, and day 5 saw no upsets. Of course, that does not mean that seeds did not fall on day 5, 24th seed Daniela Hantuchova, 27th seed Petra Kvitova, 29th seed Alona Bondarenko, and the 19th seed Flavia Pennetta, were all the seeds who could not make past the 3rd round, but they all lost to higher seeds, as expected, and cannot be termed as upsets.
