US Open 2010: Day 8 Results
Day 8 of the US Open 2010 saw some interesting matches, and with the tournament reaching the end stages, the tennis action is simply unbelievable...

Men's Results - Day 8
In the men's event, world number 2 and 5 time US Open champion, Roger Federer took on the 13th seed Jurgen Melzer in the 4th round. Melzer was the first seeded player that Federer faced in the US Open 2010. However, the Swiss star made short work of Melzer and defeated him in straight sets, to progress to yet another quarterfinal. Federer never looked uncomfortable against the 13th seed at any stage, and though there were moments where he was distracted, he came out of those moments only the way a champion can. After an easy first set, Melzer tried harder in the 2nd set, and though he managed to push the set to a tie break, it was not enough for him to get any sort of a foothold back in the match. With Federer leading 2 sets to love, it was only a matter of time before the match got over, and indeed, an early break in the 3rd set gave Federer the lead, after which he closed out the match comfortably. He now moves to the quarterfinal where he will face Robin Soderling. This will be the number 2's toughest test so far, and Soderling has already shown that he can defeat Federer on the big stage. Federer, on the other hand, will be looking to avenge his French Open loss to Soderling, and this will be a match that no tennis fan should miss.
The 3rd seed Novak Djokovic was on the court in the morning session, and was playing against the 19th seed Mardy Fish of US. After the loss of Andy Roddick early in the tournament, the dream of an American winning the US Open was on the shoulders of Mardy Fish, and Sam Querrey. Unfortunately, Fish met his match in the 3rd seeded Djokovic, where he lost in straight sets. Novak Djokovic was simply too good for the 19th seeded Fish, and moved easily in to the quarterfinals, where he will face the 17th seed Gael Monfils. With Fish out of the US Open 2010, all the American's dream will rest of the shoulders of the 20th seed Sam Querrey. Gael Monfils defeated unseeded Richard Gasquet to set up a quarterfinal clash, as mentioned above, with Novak Djokovic. Monfils never gave the Frenchman a chance and took the match in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinal. Robin Soderling, the 5th seed, overcame the 21st seed Albert Montanes, in a match that went 4 sets, and is looking all ready to face Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. He is looking for his first Grand Slam title, after having good runs to the semis and even the finals last year. However, in spite of defeating big names since last year, he has been unable to get that coveted grand slam title, and no doubt this year he will be trying his best to correct that.
So there it is, all the big guns through to the last 8 from the bottom half of the draw. Action from the top half of the men's draw will commence tomorrow.
Women's Results - Day 8
In the women's draw, it was still a day of upsets, with higher seeds failing to stay deep into the second week of the US Open 2010. Besides the top 3 seeds in the women's draw, who have been playing awesome tennis, the rest of the seeds' performance has been sketchy to say the least, and many have been ousted from the tournament. Day 8 saw the number 11 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova become the latest seeded casualty at the 2010 US Open, along with the 15th seed Yanina Wickmayer. Kuznetsova was defeated by unseeded Dominika Cibulkova in a tough match, that unfortunately didn't go to 3 sets. Cibulkova matched Kuznetsova point for point, and took the first set 7-5. The 11th seed Russian tried to make a comeback, and pushed the second set to a tie break, but was unable to take the match into the deciding 3rd set. She lost the tie break and the match, giving the unseeded Cibulkova her first US Open quarterfinal berth. Yanina Wickmayer, the 15th seed, also faced a shocking defeat at the hands of in form Kaia Kanepi, in a match that went to 3 sets. After losing the first set 6-0, it looked like the 15th seed was well in control and would close out the match with ease. However, the 31st seed Kanepi had other ideas in mind, and she fought back in the second set, pushing it to a tie break, which she eventually won. Taking the second set boosted her confidence and she never looked back, allowing Wickmayer to take just a solitary game in the final set. She too, moves on to her first quarterfinal here at the US Open.
The other two matches in the women's singles event brought expected results, with Caroline Wozniacki, the number 1 seed, easily defeating the 14th seeded Maria Sharapova. Expected to be a tough encounter, the match was disappointing, with Sharapova going down tamely in straight sets. Wozniacki's form continues, and she looks ready to match her last year's efforts here, at a minimum. In the other encounter, the 7th seed Vera Zvonareva brushed past the feeble resistance put up by the unseeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany. Zvonareva too moves to her first US Open quarterfinal in 7 attempts.
Schedule of Play on Day 9
