US East Coast Hit By Snowstorm

A severe snowstorm has hit the eastern coast of the United States.
Nearly a dozen states in the United States have been affected by a snowstorm. Long Island, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Rhode Island are the states that have been most affected. Even Washington and New York were not spared. The heaviest snowfall was reported in Wintergreen, VA, which experienced around 30 inches of snowfall.

The storm, hit the mid-Atlantic states and the nation's capital on Saturday, and it moved across the Northeast by Sunday. For most people, this was the biggest snowstorm in years. Flights were resumed after they had been temporarily shut. But thousands of travelers were stranded and were being set up in backup flights, and the backlog was expected to last all of this week. Thousands of sanitation workers were plowing around the clock to clear highways and streets. With many cars still buried under snow, alternate-side parking rules were suspended for the time being.

John Searing, deputy commissioner of the Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services said, "I passed 15 abandoned vehicles on my way to work, while dozens more slowed clearing efforts on the Long Island Expressway and other highways." Motorists were advised to stay off treacherous roads, and scores of accidents had taken place, but thankfully there were no serious injuries reported. Though there were a couple of deaths reported, it was still not clear if they were related to the snowstorm.

It was the last day of autumn, and parks were turned into snow meadows. Many people were out enjoying the pre-winter spectacle, and were seen gliding down hills on sleds, snowboards, and indulging in snow skiing.
