U.S. and Allies Seek "Unfettered Access" to Iran Site
The U.S. and its allies are becoming increasingly adamant about full disclosure of nuclear facilities in Iran, on the heels of a discovered site that was kept secret for years.
The drama between the Western world, led by President Barack Obama, and Iran continued over the weekend. On Saturday Obama offered Iran "a serious, meaningful dialogue" regarding that country’s disputed nuclear program. At the same time, Obama, with other allies and world leaders in agreement, warned Iran that there would be serious consequences for disobeying the wishes of a global front that is seeking full disclosure by the Middle Eastern country. Obama said on Saturday, "Iran’s leaders must now choose – they can live up to their responsibilities and achieve integration with the community of nations. Or they will face increased pressure and isolation, and deny opportunity to their own people."
Accordingly, the U.S., along with Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, will present a "transparency package" in an October 1 meeting. The package is designed to highlight specific demands by the allies for transparency regarding nuclear activities throughout Iran. Further, the group of allies seek assurances from Iran that its intentions with regard to various nuclear sites are indeed related to the peaceful production of nuclear energy. The demands come on the heels of a discovered secret nuclear site in Iran.
Said a White House spokesman, "After hiding this site from the international community for years, full transparency is essential, and it is time for Iran to play by the rules like everyone else." Obama reiterated that sentiment, noting, "My offer of a serious, meaningful dialogue to resolve this issue remains open." Obama went on to say that he wished to see Iran "take action to demonstrate its peaceful intentions."
