For reasons still unknown to investigators, 64-year-old Kurt Myers went on a wild shooting spree in Herkimer, New York on Wednesday. Myers shot six people, killing four of them, before barricading himself in an abandoned motel. Police tried to get to Myers on Wednesday night, but he opened fire and a stand-off ensued. Police and FBI agents surrounded the building and eventually sent in a dog armed with a camera early on Thursday morning.
Myers shot and killed the dog but police returned fire and killed him, ending the bloody ordeal. Myers began his rampage early on Wednesday morning when he set his apartment on fire in Mohawk, New York. While firefighters were responding to the blaze, he made his way to the local barbershop, where he shot four people, killing two of them. He then drove to a car wash, where he shot and killed two more people. Myers then headed to the abandoned motel where he barricaded himself before being killed by police.
Myers used a shotgun to shoot his victims, although the make and model of the weapon are not known at this time. With the gun debate still simmering in Washington, this episode will only serve as another reminder that the situation is beyond legislation. No new laws could have possibly prevented Mr. Myers from carrying out this heinous act. And the sad reality is that there simply may not be a viable solution to the problem of gun violence in America.
