Upcoming 10-inch Tablets

Is the trend of big tablets slowly becoming a thing of yesteryears? A look at the list of upcoming tablets, with quite a few 10-inch tablets enlisted in it, has a totally different story to tell. Let's try to find out more about it.....
Everybody is eagerly waiting for Apple Inc. to announce their third generation tablet PC - the iPad 3. The expectations from the new Apple iPad are sky high, and going by initial rumors it seems like the device is quite promising. Of the numerous alleged iPad 3 features making rounds of the tech arena, one in particular - which states that the new iPad will be smaller than its predecessor, seems to have grabbed everybody's attention. In fact, some sources have even gone to the extent of calling it the 'iPad Mini'. Does that imply that the time of big tablets, i.e. the 9.7 and 10-inch tablets, is over?

Are 10-inch Tablets Becoming Obsolete?

Why would a company whose ex-CEO called 7-inch tablets 'dead on arrival', 'terrible' and 'too small to compete', go on to downsize one of their best-selling product? Seems like we are trying to look beyond the obvious. Firstly, Apple is yet to come out with an official statement which says that the iPad 3 will be smaller than the iPad 2. We are merely relying on the rumors, most of which say that the next iPad will be slightly smaller than its predecessor - and the word 'slightly' in this context is a bit too vague to interpret. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, there do exist quite a few 10-inch tablets which are scheduled for release in 2012, but we seem to be more than happy to turn a blind eye to this fact.

Apple is not the only manufacturer which intends to launch its next generation tablet in 2012. Other manufacturers like the Samsung, Vizio, Amazon, etc. are also in fray; and some of them are quite candid about their intentions of manufacturing big tablets. In fact, Amazon - which made a lot of buzz in the tech arena with Kindle Fire last year, is expected to launch the 10-inch version of their tablet in 2012. If the buzz made by 7-inch Kindle Fire with a price tag of US$199 was anything to go by, the launch of 10-inch Amazon tablet is undoubtedly something to look out for.

Upcoming 10-inch Tablets

There is no questioning the fact that tablet computers which are being manufactured today are thinner and lighter than their predecessors. The general opinion that they are becoming smaller with time though, doesn't really hold ground with tablets like the Huawei MediaPad 10 and 10-inch Kindle Fire scheduled for a release later this year. If you intend to buy a tablet PC from the 10-inch category, here are some upcoming tablets that you need to look out for.

Huawei MediaPad 10,
Huawei MediaPad 10, the 10-inch Android tablet from the Chinese bigwig, is slated for a release at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012 which begins in Barcelona, Spain, on 27th February. The details about the tech specifications of MediaPad 10 are yet to be out, but it is believed that this Huawei tablet will have the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on board, and sport an 8 mp rear camera with flash. Though not much is being spoken about the processor, experts are hopeful of something big as the company is willing to give up on its budget-friendly tag and do pure business.

Asus Padfone
Asus is also expected to launch its much-anticipated Padfone - a smartphone-tablet combo, wherein the smartphone can be docked to the tablet, at the Mobile World Congress. The idea behind docking a smartphone behind a compartment in the tablet is to integrate the two devices, thus making it possible to share data on both - that would give the user the freedom to use any of the two devices as per his convenience. With the difference between smartphone and tablet fast fading, a smartphone-tablet hybrid will undoubtedly be a welcome change.

Vizio 10-inch Tablet
At 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012), Vizio announced its M-Series tablet with a 10-inch screen as the successor to its existing 8-inch tablet. The new Vizio tablet is expected to hit the stores sometime this year. Not much has been revealed about the specifications of this tablet as yet, and the only information that the Vizio official website provides pertains to the 10-inch display and Wi-Fi capabilities of this device.

Amazon 10-inch Tablet
It is also believed that Amazon will follow the 7-inch Kindle Fire, which was released last year, with a new 10-inch tablet later this year. The performance of Kindle Fire far excelled the expectations from a tablet costing US$199, with some people going to the extent of calling it an iPad killer or a Nook killer - purely on the basis of its affordable pricing. The cloud storage will once again provide the boost for Amazon, but the competition in 10-inch segment has increased with low-priced tablets making it to the stores.

With all these tablets scheduled for release in course of this year, and some like the Toshiba Thrive (10.1 inches) and Sony S (9.4 inches) which were released recently, the bottom-line is that the trend of 10-inch tablets is far from over. The size of existing tablets, ranging from 5 to 10 inches, has only added to the variety of options available for you as the end consumer, wherein you get to choose the tablet which is convenient for you to carry around. A 5-inch Dell Streak would be an ideal bet if you intend to carry it around in your trouser. If you are willing to use a bag for your tablet though, you will have a range of 10-inch tablets to choose from - a choice which will only become difficult with time.
