Unrequited Love

A ghost from the past can bring back painful memories.
I remember you so well,
From all those years ago,
When in love with you, I fell,
But you didn't want to know.
You just packed your bags and left,
You caught the midnight train,
And you left my love bereft,
With all the unrequited pain.

And so I cried tears for a while,
Like a boy with a broken toy,
And that was really not my style,
And it's never been my ploy.
I've always had a reputation,
Of being a hero to the feisty,
Having a hardened reaction,
Where pain washes away easily.

You left me despondent, with little hope,
You didn't even see my silver tears,
You just assumed that I would cope,
With all the empty years.
I thought you would come back, somehow,
But that was never to be our destiny,
So who sails your ship now?
Who floats on your sea of ecstasy?

It is good to see you again,
And to know you're looking well,
I know from your gucci prints,
That you've made something of yourself.
Well I'm still the same old me,
Wearing the same old clothes,
And if you look real close, you'll see,
The same old tears drip of my nose.

I may look confident on the outside,
But inside, I've been breaking up,
Each time the shattered pieces collide,
Another piece of my heart breaks off.
And the shards rip my soul to shreds,
It has a serious urge to fly,
Because, seeing you again today,
Makes me want to curl up and die.

My mind keeps harkening back,
To the happier times we shared,
When we'd walk the beaten track,
Hand in hand, without a care.
But that was oh, so long ago,
And the memories tend to fade,
Like melting, springtime snow,
That washed away my artificial facade.

So you see, my heart still yearns,
For you to come back home,
And my body longs to hold yours,
Even if it's only one more time.
So I will put you to the test,
And leave the first move up to you,
And if you want to rekindle the zest,
Then requite the heart you took.
