Unpaid Taxes: Try to Settle First
Do you qualify for a settlement? It is rare that people actually qualify for settling their taxes but it is worth determining if you qualify first before trying to pay what you owe.
They truly want to help their situation, but do not have the money or the financial prospects to make any progress in the near future. If you find yourself in this situation, and you really don’t have any way out, you should think about settling your unpaid taxes with the IRS. This may end up backfiring on you, but at the very least you have the right to submit the proper information to see if you qualify for a settlement.
Many people get excited when they learn that the IRS may settle their unpaid taxes. But soon enough their joy turns to sadness because they find out that they do not qualify. Again, the IRS is not going to let everybody pay less than what they owe; this would not work out for them. Those who are truly in a bad position, and can prove it to the IRS, may qualify and be able to settle soon enough.
There are many types of tax settlements. In some cases, taxpayers are allowed to settle for the time being but will be required to pay in full as soon as their financial situation changes.
Are you unsure of how much you owe in unpaid taxes, and whether you even have a case for settlement? This is a job for a tax professional. You don’t want to pay your tax liability if you could settle. Those who don’t know what goes into this may miss out on a good opportunity.
Before you pay your unpaid taxes you should see if the IRS is willing to settle with you. A professional can tell you whether or not you qualify, within reason, so you do not have to waste your time asking the IRS, getting rejected, etc.
