Unique Solutions with Possibility for Lifes Speed Bumps
Possibility is the basis for all change. It is your choice to let it blossom and flourish or die on the vine.
Possibility is absolutely fascinating to me. It glimmers all around tantalizing, exciting, even a little bit scary. I see it in everything just waiting for the right nutrients to make it grow and blossom. Yet not everyone sees possibility in everyday life and sometimes not even in the big picture.
I frequently hear "I didn’t even think of that possibility" from clients. Friends and family also comment on it. I didn’t even know what it was until a few months ago when a client told me that she was seeing her life in a monochromatic singular path kind of way and after each session she felt that a new color and a new path were added to the picture. She then asked "How do you do that?" I didn’t know I was ‘doing’ anything other than coaching. It made me stop and really think about it.
What came up was the ability to see the possibility in each moment, after all each day is simply pregnant with possibility. It’s really at the base of why we pursue self development, new relationships, new career paths, or any new experience for that matter. It’s the lure of seeing, doing, or experiencing life in a new way.
It’s also what holds us back. Sometimes looking at all that’s possible can send you straight into overwhelm, holding your head in your hands and unable to take any action. What most people do is turn off the possibility factor only looking at logical, guaranteed results. The problem with this is it bypasses creativity, adventure, and expansion for the status quo.
The beauty of possibility is that you don’t have to do anything with it, simply seeing it and feeling it is expansive and engaging. It imbues a sense of empowerment because YOU get to choose. When you look at a situation and feel you have no choice it can feel very constrictive. When you look at the possibilities, not necessarily the probabilities, you open up the space for new creative innovative solutions. Even though some of the possibilities may be unlikely, opening the door allows you to expand and feel more positive about the situation.
When my kids were small I had a difficult time finding quality child care to fit my schedule at the hospital of early mornings and varied days. I looked at all of the possibilities and came up with a wonderful creative solution that I could afford. We hired a local retired woman who loved kids but didn’t want to turn her home into a daycare so she came to our house, it was the perfect solution.
Is there an area of your life that you could invite more possibility into? Sometimes asking the question "If there were no limiting factors how could I view this?" Let your mind roam. If your gremlin voice pops in spewing the ‘don’t be silly, that’s not possible’ rhetoric just acknowledge it and say thanks but right now I’m dancing with possibility. Try it out and see how allowing the possibilities in to your life expands and energizes you.
