Unhealthy School Lunches
Unhealthy school lunches are a matter of serious concern. Parents must encourage their children to eat healthy and explain the negatives of fast foods. Read on.

Steps to Make School Lunches Healthy
The legislation has planned for a new standard of meal plan for kids at school. It can be treated as one of the most vital solutions to unhealthy school lunches. According to it, more healthier foods will be made available to the kids, in contrast to the unhealthy meals like pizzas, hamburgers, fries, et al, which are the causes that can lead to childhood obesity. That does not mean that these popular foods will be totally banished, but then they will be made more healthier. Also, the vending machines will be stocked with more of lesser-calorie sodas, low-fat milk, and the likes.
Being a kid it is obvious that they will never want to eat cereals or vegetables on their own will, nor will they be happy eating them. What they will go after is pizzas and burgers. The reason is simple, they like it, hence they eat it. But then at the same time, they must be made aware of the benefits of eating healthy foods and must be encouraged to do so. And as a treat, they can eat whatever they wish on certain days of the week.
How Can Parents Help?
When kids go to school, of course, you will not be behind them to have them eat the food we want. But then the best that we can do is, to make them understand about the effects of unhealthy school lunches. I am not saying that it is simpler said than done, but then it is always good to start it somewhere. You also can encourage them to eat meals that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, avoiding fried foods, brown bread instead of white, etc. Also, if you pack lunch for your kids, you can choose to use more healthier food alternatives like baked chips instead of fried ones, low-fat milk or pure fruit juices instead of sodas, homemade baked goods instead of cookies.
It is understandable that kids will not choose vegetables over a hamburger, but then if explained about it and encouraged to eat healthy, it can be made possible. There is a need for parents to consider it because a school kid's food intake mostly includes breakfast, lunch, and after-school snacks at school itself. Hence, there is a need to change the nutrition plan for these kids at school, so that more healthier foods are consumed rather than fast food.
It is believed that the school food program was introduced because, at that time during World War II, many new recruits were undernourished and didn't meet the physical requirements of the military. That was the time when institutions felt a need to let the kids eat better to become healthier, and now is the time when meals are offered but with ignorance of nutrition.
Obesity is one of the major health hazard which our changing lifestyle has brought today. It is one of the most harmful health conditions which is rapidly increasing throughout the world. Obesity is being targeted as the only major reasons for adverse health effects. It leads to severe health problems and in addition to this, it also reduce life expectancy.
It has been found out that, to increase the academic courses, schools have been cutting on physical education. This in addition, does add up to the unhealthy lifestyle of school kids. All of this does not mean that all schools offer unhealthy school lunches, there are schools which do offer healthy and nutritional meals too. But then the kids prefer eating unhealthy junk food over them. Improving children's eating habits can help them a lot dealing with it.
