Understanding User Interface Design

It is a known yet often ignored fact that good user interface design can lead to great success for software products. Software and web site designers need to have an in depth understanding of user interface design if they want to have positive results. Good interface design takes into account the information flow, and ease of use. The goals of good interface design should be a pleasant customer experience and a good result for the company that is selling a product of service.

Certain facts you have to know

If there is a slightest lapse on the part of the interface designer, there may be costly errors that will have to be dealt with at some point in time. The fact is that if a user visits your site and finds any mistakes, it will be a matter of seconds before you have lost them for good. Based on ease of use and navigation, users are constantly deciding if sites are worth staying on or using.

First, you need to know your customers tendencies and what they want from your site. Keep in mind that users are using their valuable time which should not be wasted. If they are on a site that disappoints or frustrates them because of poor interface design, they will be gone for good.

The main objective of an interface developer is to design and apply a quality user interface. However there is no agreed upon definition or description of what a quality user interface actually is. Some may work better than others, but there is not one perfect solution that can be applied to all interfaces. The best way to make sure that you are employing a quality interface design is to follow a well defined and orderly process that might yield a quality result.

Steps of user interface designing

There are many steps that should be followed in user interface design. However these steps may change depending on what the individual project requires.

Before the design process starts, you have to do some very important home work. You need to assemble the design team, gather the requirements, and then define the objective of the project. Gather the list of the functionality that is required to accomplish the goal and that will meat user’s potential needs.

Analyzing the users of the system is also a very important step. You can do this either by discussion with potential users or people who are working with the users.

The next step is related to information architecture. This has to do with the way in which information flows and is setup or organized. Another step is prototyping. A prototype should be designed with only the basic elements in place so that the focus can be on usability and ease of use. With a simple model the interface can be tested for ease of use.

Lastly the usability test is something that should not be missed out in the interface designing. This will let you know what the visitors will feel about your site or product interface.
