Just keep walking, maybe they won't ketch you. just keep walking.

'Sir, are you going to buy that?' The cashier asked. RUN! I run out the store and keep running. I feel my hood of my black hoodie come off and I don't care I look behind me to see no one so I cut threw a ally and up the fire stairs from the back of my apartment and quickly slip inside my window. I pull out the loaf of bread from my large pocket. I also pulled out the candy bars too. I went over to the small bed that was next to mine.

'Annie, Annie.' I whisper.

'Derek?' she asks loudly sitting up rubbing her eyes.

'SHHHH!' I say. To late, the door click open and the lights flipped on.

'Where have you been?!' My father yelled. 'You have been steeling again!'

'Dad, you don't feed Annie and I enough here!' I yelled back in protection of my 7-year-old sister and I. This wasn't the first time he has caught me.

'WE FEED YOU ENOUGH!' He yelled back. 'STUPID BOY!' he says, I knew what was coming next just like how animals know when there is going to be a earthquake. He came up and punched my face than my stomach. 'STUPID BOY! Never EVER again will you do that! Now go to sleep.' he said pushing me into the wall and leaving with my mom in the doorway crying. My mom wasn't as bad as my father. He hurt her too. She has been wanting to leave him for years, but hasn't gotten brave enough to. He flipped off the lights and left the room. I sunk to the floor and heard footsteps quickly run to me.

'Derek?' Annie asked. 'Are you okay?'

'Yea, Annie.' I lie, I pull out something from my pocket that I had protected for her. I pulled out a small chocolate bar. 'I got this for you.'

'Chocolate?!' she asked surprised. 'thank you, Derek! thank you!' she whispered. Our parents never fed us much. Mom tried but dad was unemployed and she was working full-time at a dinner called 'Johnny's'. Dad spends his day at the bars. Most of his nights too but tonight he was sadly home. I keep bread and other food in a drawer, in my room for me and Annie. A 15-year-old boy should be eating more than one piece of pizza a day. I hated pizza now. It was either pizza or chicken.

'You're welcome kiddo.' I said hugging her. Dad didn't hit Annie. He yelled at her. But he wouldn't dare hit a little girl like her. But he is willing to hit my mom? It's wrong. I hate it here.

I live in the Getto part of Chicago. Graffiti and drug dealers everywhere. I go to a public school and have two friends who are just as bad as me. Ben's dad left him as a kid and his mom is a druggy. Zach's dad left too, but his mom has had 5 husbands. They do it because they think they are worthless. I do it for the sake of my sister.

Annie and I sat there in pure silence as I held her and she ate her candy bar.
*******************
When I woke up Annie was poking me.

'Derek.' she said loudly. 'Dad's at the bar so your clear. It's time to get up.' I open my eye's and see Annie there in old tennis shoes, jeans, and a long sleeve shirt with her book-bag hung over her shoulder.

'Hummmm?' I asked sitting up. I was still where I was when Annie and I fell asleep last night.

'Get ready!' she said. I stood up and ran to the bathroom to take a shower. Which was cold... like normal. I quickly combed my long black hair and looked at myself in the mirror that was small and cracked, along with the walls. I was very pale, from some things I tried years ago (if you know what I mean) and I looked at my pale blue eyes. They stood out from my pale skin and dark black hair. I went to my room to find the only pair of jeans I own along with my other hoodie and t-shirt I have.

'Ready?' I ask Annie. 'Got your lunch?' I asked opening the drawer pulling out a small brown bag that had my lunch in it, (that I stole and made for myself and sister)

'Yup!' she smiled.

'Okay, let's go.' I smiled. We went out into the hall to the front room where my mom was pulling on her coat, over her uniform.

'Ready?' she asked with a smile. My mom was beautiful. She had long wavy blonde hair with bright green eyes that sparkled when she looked at us kids. I don't know why any one would even think about hurting her. Annie looked a lot like her. I looked like my father. which was the reason I hated myself but I promised myself I would never turn into him.

'Come on, Annie.' she said holding Annie's hand. We walked down the stairs and out the front door of our apartment onto the street.

'Ready for the test today, Derek?' my mom asked looking over at me.

'Yea, I think I will do very well I studied all day yesterday.' I said. We talked some more when my mom stopped at where Johnny's was. We said goodbye and continued on. I took Annie's other hand as we kept walking. I walked her to the elementary school and walked to the high school for myself. My day was normal, getting bad glares from teachers, girls, and common passers that looked at my outfit and knew I was from the getto. I just kept walking with my two best friends.

'Hey, Derek, we are going to steel some beer tonight and go hit up some girls. Wanna come?' Zach asked.

'No thanks. I need to be home for my sister tonight. Sorry.' I say.

'Will you tell her hi for us?' Ben asked. Ben and Zach loved Annie and my mom. They hated my dad. One time they took his car and wrecked it. My dad was really mad. It is 8th period and I am sitting listening to the Science teacher go on and on about nothing when the Fuzz come in. Everyone starts to whisper about our new guest.

'Um, sorry to interrupt you, Mr. Kelbs. But we need Derek Franks.' said one Cop. Shit. I sunk into my chair.

'Um,' my teacher said surprised. 'Of course.' he said pointing to me.

'Mr. Franks. You're going to have to come with us,' said the other cop pulling me up from my seat and placing my hands behind me strapping on metal handcuffs on my wrists. 'You have been charged of shop lifting.' I saw the shocked faces and whispers around the room. I would have given the whole place the middle finger if I were cuffed right now.

I followed them to the car when Ben and Zach saw me. They rolled there eyes and ran after us.

'Yo! Fuzz!' said Ben.

'Who?' said one of the cops.

'I mean, police.' said Ben as we all stopped. 'Stop, you can't take, Derek down to the big house, man.' he said.

'Yes, yes we can.' said the cop that was holding me. We were outside and the cops were opening up the cop car door.

'No! No you can't.' said Zach punching one of the cops. Ben went after the other. They immediately dropped me and I got the cue to start running. I just ran and ran. I was a very good runner and in very good shape. Very good shape.

'GET BACK HERE! GET BACK HERE!' Said a cop as he ran after me. I cut threw Ally's and was to fast for him. But the time the chase stopped it was around four or five. I ran up the fire stairs to my room.

'DEREK!' Annie whispered running to me. 'Dad is mad. Dad is going to hurt you. Dad...' she was cut in by a click.

'YOU BASTERED. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!' my dad said coming into the room. Surprised no hitting. 'GET OUT NOW! I DON"T EVER WANT TO SEE YOUR FACE EVER AGAIN GET OUT!' he yelled. It was shortly lived he ran out. I quickly packed my backpack full of clothes and some food and my dad grabbed my shirt and threw me into the hall of our apartment and shut the door. I sat there on the ground of the hallway of my apartment. Shit. I didn't even get to say goodbye to my sister.

'Derek?' I heard Annie and I looked up to see she stepped out of the apartment. She hugged me. 'Where are you going?' she asked.

'I don't know. But I swear we will be together soon. I will make sure of that. I will write you and call you and I will see you at the school. okay?' I asked looking into her eyes that were filled with tears.

'ANNIE! ANNIE GET OVER HERE!' I heard my dad yell. I kissed her on the forehead and she scurried inside. I sat there for a few more moments. Everything had happened so fast.... A note slipped under the door.
To: Derek
From: Mom.

I just grabbed it and started running down the hall. It won't be long till the fuzz will show up here. I just kept running. I went down the stairway and threw the doors. I just ran. I don't know where, but I ran. I just ran. I took a couple subways and finally it was so late I was kind of scared to be out. I just kept walking in the dark streets of chicago. I looked around to find a park or something for me to sleep at when I saw light.

Lots of lights. I saw a huge beautiful building that had lights in it. It said 'Saint Mary's Catholic Church.' I step up the big steps slowly and opened the large double doors to a world I have never known before.
