Unclog Ears

Clogged ears is a common ear problem that occurs due to wax blockage, which causes the obstruction of the ear canal with the wax. Ear canal is lined with hair follicles and glands, which produce a waxy oil called cerumen. Earwax in a way is good, because it helps to protect the ear by trapping dust, bacteria and other microorganisms and foreign particles from entering and damaging the ear. Earwax also helps in protecting the delicate skin of the ear canal from becoming irritated when water is inside the canal. This wax usually makes its way to the opening of the ear, where it falls out or is removed by washing. However, in some people, the glands produce excess wax, that can be easily removed from the ear. This excess wax may harden inside the ear canal and block the ear. The wax may block the ear canal if you try to clean the ear, and sometimes accidentally push the wax deeper inside. Many people experience symptoms like earache, noises in the ear, sensation of fullness in the ear, partial hearing loss which might even get worse. Hence, to prevent clogging of ears, one should perform earwax removal often. If you are suffering from blocked ear, then use these remedies to unblock the ear.

How to Unclog Ears?
  • You can use various ingredients to soften the earwax. Things like baby oil, commercial drops, glycerin and mineral oil can be used.
  • Many people use detergent drops like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to remove the wax.
  • Other method of removing wax is called irrigation. Using body temperature water, with the head upright, straighten the ear canal by holding the ear outside and gently pulling it upward. Then use a syringe to gently direct a small stream of water against the ear canal wall next to the wax plug. Then tip your head to allow the water to drain. You might need to repeat this remedy several times, to unclog the ears.
  • Make sure you never irrigate the ear if the eardrum is not intact. Because irrigation with a ruptured eardrum might cause ear infection or acoustic trauma. Also, never use a jet instigator designed for cleaning teeth.
  • To unclog ears after swimming, stand on your right foot, and tilt your head towards the right side. Then jump on the floor, simultaneously with your forefinger shake your right ear. Do this 10 times. Then repeat for the left ear.
  • Once the wax is removed, dry the ear completely. You can use few drops of alcohol in the ear, or hold the hair dryer at an arm length and on low setting use it for few seconds to dry your ear.

  • To unblock ears after cold, you can take a swig of tabasco sauce, this will help to open up the nasal passages along with the ear canal.
  • To get rid of ear blockage during congestion, sit in the bathroom with a hot shower running. The steam will help to clear up the congestion, and unclog the sinus infection.
  • Another quick way is to hold your nose with your fingers and blow gently. This will make your ears pop, can be used for unclogging ears after flying.
