Uncinate Process

The uncinate process is a projected bone like structure present in different organs of the body. It extends from the pancreas, the spine and the cervical vertebrae. The sickle shaped bony leaflet like structure protrudes from the anterosuperior attachment on the lateral nasal wall. From the nasal wall it extends further to the posteroinferior attachment on the inferior turbinate. The uncinate process touches the posteromedial to its free margin. The posterosuperior free margin runs parallel to the anterior surface. A structure known as ethmoid bulla is attached here.

The uncinate process in an intricate framework that is attached perpendicularly to the palatine bone and the ethmoid process of the turbinate, supported by bony spicules. The uncinate process also forms the cervical vertebra, the pancreas and the spine. In some cases, the bone enlarges and looks like an elongated structure.

Uncinate Process of the Pancreas

The uncinate process is a hook-like projection from the inferior portion of the head of the pancreas. It is vulnerable to carcinoma, although the conditions are rare. It curls posterior to the superior mesenteric vessels that's sometimes formed due to the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. The uncinate process of the pancreas is also known as uniciform pancreas, winslow's pancreas, willis' pancreas, lesser pancreas, or unicate pancreas. If defined specifically, it's the angle of junction of the lower and the left lateral border that forms a prolongation. During the process of embryogenesis, there's considerable development of the distal foregut. The C-shaped duodenum is formed while the ventral pancreatic bud is rotated into the dorsal bud. The ventral pancreatic buds fuse with the dorsal bud. The ventral pancreatic bud forms the uncinate process and the head of the pancreas while the ventral becomes the body, tail and the isthmus of the pancreas.

The uncinate process of the pancreas needs resection if affected by ganglioneuroma or any kind of tumorous growth. Carcinoma of the pancreatic uncinate process or any type of pancreatic cancer, is a rare condition and needs surgery if detected.

Uncinate Process of the Cervical Vertebra

Cervical uncinate process is similar to that of the pancreas. The structure is quite similar, except the location. It's a hook shaped process that projects from the lateral border or the side edges of the top of the bodies lying in the vertebral region. It lies between the third and sixth of the cervical vertebra. The first thoracic vertebra is also known as uncinate process or cervical vertebra. The bony part provides a support to the vertebra and prevents it from sliding backwards from below. The uncinate process of the spine is a similar structure to that of the cervix. This bone is projected into the ethmoid bone that articulates with the interior portion of the nasal conchae.

The uncinate process of the ribs can be a separate projection of bones. They mostly occur in birds and in reptiles. This bone strengthens the rib cage and helps to perform swift motion. They play a significant role in the respiration process by increasing the effectiveness of the muscles involved in the respiratory process. Narrowing of the spine due to enlargement can cause health problems.

Uncinate Process Hypertrophy

Enlargement is known as uncinate hypertrophy. This is a condition wherein the projections from the cervical vertebrae increases in size. This narrows down the cervical forearms, giving rise to uncinate process hypertrophy. It also gives rise to other complications like foraminal stenosis. In this case, the uncinate process of the forearm of the vertebrae of the spine enlarges causing cervical pinched nerves. The space for attachment of the spinal nerves to the other parts of the body is reduced, leading to stenosis.

From the above mentioned content, we come to know the importance of the uncinate process in our body. This bone actually provides support to the main bones present in our body. Enlargement or reduction in size can give rise to muscular or nerve complications. For this a surgery is the cure.
