Ultrasonic Pest Control Effectiveness
The efficacy of ultrasonic pest control devices is surrounded by several controversies. Know about them, and know what you are investing in.

Pest Control Using Ultrasonic Waves
Let us first know about the working of pest control devices. As the name suggests, these devices work on the principle of ultrasonic waves. These high-frequency waves do not fall in the audible frequency range of humans (20 Hz - 20 kHz) and so, are not detected by the human ear. Rodents and insects have the ability to hear such high-frequency sounds and they tend to find them disturbing to their ears. This way, they keep away from the areas which have been covered by the sound waves, thus, getting repelled away. These devices are inexpensive and do not come heavy on your pockets. Available with plug-in and cordless features, they are also built with different frequency producing equipment. For example, for repelling mice, rats or cockroaches, you get devices with frequencies which will be different than those which can be used for spiders, ants and other insects. While going for any device, ensure that you get one, which is safe to be used in the presence of dogs, cats, birds and other pets.
Does It Work?
The recommended use of these ultrasonic devices is to place them near the areas such as tunnels or holes, which serve as entrances for the pests. This is due to the fact, that ultrasonic waves are ineffective on pests if they hit any solid area, something like a solid object between the pests and the devices.
However, several researches have investigated and found, these devices are not as effective in repelling pests, as they are projected to be. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which is an independent agency of the United States and works for consumer rights, laid charges on several companies which were falsely advertising the efficacy of these devices in repelling pests. These companies suffered financial losses from making full refunds to the customers.
Other scientific studies claim that most pests share the same hearing range as humans do. So, if humans remain unaffected by the waves, then, so will be the pests. So, this fact also questions whether these ultrasonic devices really work to ward off pests.
As you can infer from the above description, the efficacy of the ultrasonic pest control devices is highly suspected to be true and genuine. Thus, self-assessment and testing are the smartest things you can do to get the best out of your investment.
