Ukraine, a nation in Eastern Europe, is bordered on the north by Belarus, on the north and east by Russia, on the south by the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, on the southwest by Romania and Moldova, and on the west by Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. One of the largest European countries, it ranks second in area (after Russia), and sixth in population. The capital of Ukraine is Kiev. For much of its history the country has been subject to Russian and Polish influence. Formerly a republic of the USSR, it became independent in 1991.
