A moth belongs to the order Lepidoptera and is closely related to the butterfly. However, a moth can be distinguished from a butterfly in several ways. The scientific name for a moth is "Heterocera". The term "moth" is derived from an old English word "moððe".
The study of moths is known as "lepidoptery" and the scientists/biologists who specialize in the study of moths are known as "lepidopterists". Moth watching is known as "mothing" and the moth watcher is known as "moth-er".
