Pennington, 42, was arrested on May 5 in Los Angeles at approximately 12:35 a.m. on suspicion of drunk driving. He told Entertainment Tonight, "I made a really bad error in judgment. It made me realize how important every decision you make in your life is because it affects everyone, not just yourself." Pennington's blood alcohol level was .14 percent at the time of his arrest, according to Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan. The state of California's legal limit is .08 percent. On May 8, Pennington was charged with two misdemeanors of driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher. He faces up to six-months in jail if he is convicted.
Pennington said on Entertainment Tonight, "I realized if you made a mistake, I think you ought to step up and admit that you did. I'm just that kind of person, If you do something that you know you shouldn't have, stand up and accept it." He went on to say that if given the chance to do it over he would "probably take a cab." He went on to say, "But if we could hit rewind in our life, I think we would do a bunch of things differently. But you can't do that. All you can do is accept what's happened and learn from it." Pennington is expected to appear in court on the drunk driving charges on June 4.
He is the popular host of ABC's hit television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, has a style line for Sears, and is the author of a home improvement guide. Pennington says that he understands the implications of his arrest and what they could mean for his every day life. He said, "It could jeopardize everything, including my job, which to me is the greatest job in the world. I would never want to jeopardize that. I get to do something that a lot of people never get to do in their lifetime and actually get to make a difference in people's lives."
