Two-sided Heart
They've been friends forever through thick and thin they can tell when each other are sad or mad, but she can't tell his real feelings for her. Please read and comment.
You know what sucks about being a 7-year-old girl who doesn't like Barbie dolls, the color pink, and who likes climbing trees... everything. All the other girls don't want to play with you because you don't have a Barbie and would never think about owning one. They also think you play to rough and dress funny and the only time you do play with them is when they're playing house and you get to be the dad. Then the boys wouldn't play with you either one word... cooties. I felt like an outcast I didn't fit in anywhere but I always had my best friend Ian. Even though he was sometimes prone to infectious 7-year-old boy diseases, and didn't want to play with me because of what the other boys said he was always there when it counted.
"Eww Anna you have grass stains on your pants," Emily said.
"I was playing soccer with my cousin Parker can I play with you guys," I asked.
"Ugh no you're gross and you don't have a Barbie" Rachel said.
"I do I had my mom buy me that new one" I exclaimed pulling it out my bag.
"Oh my god you have the new Malibu Barbie with leather mini-skirt" Emily and Rachel's mouth opened.
"Yeah I guess" I said turning the doll to look at it in confusion I would never grasp the concept of playing with Barbie's and action figures.
"Can I see it" Emily asked I handed her the doll and she held it like it was porcelain. I heard the noise of a playing card in a bike spoke approaching so I turned to see who it was. Parker and Ian pulled up on their bikes and dropped them next to my bike next to the bike rack Emily's and Rachel's were of course chained nicely in the rack.
"Anna! Ian just got the new WWE wrestling game and it has 4 player option Gabe is coming over you wanna be our 4th" Parker said out of breath from the ride.
"Heck yeah Emily can I have my doll I got to go."
"Oh hi Parker" Emily said waving at Parker.
"Hi Emily," Parker said shyly.
"Can I have my doll" I asked again.
"Can I just play with it for today I'll give it back to you tomorrow."
"Come on Anna" Ian yelled getting back on his bike.
"Sure but you have to give it back tomorrow you promise."
"I pinky promise," she extended her finger I shook it and hopped on my bike and left with Parker and Ian. Months went by and I didn't get my doll back I finally told my mom and she called Emily's mom who made her give it back it was in a completely different outfit and I'm not sure it was the same doll. Emily and her friends picked on me after that calling me a tattle tell and never played with me ever again. I always had Ian though and my cousin Parker to play with and Ian even though he was super scrawny was ready to fight for me. Parker went to a different school but whenever he came to visit Emily and her friends were always nice to me I later found out she had a crush on him.
Fast forward three years and there I was walking home from school with my best friend in the whole wide world Ian. Everyday we'd come to my house and do our homework but this one particular day I open the door said I'm home and no one answered. My dad or mom was always home when I got home from school Ian and I walked around the corner he let out a gasp and turned to cover my eyes before I could see.
"Ian what are you doing." I tried to pull his hands from over my eyes without luck he was scrawny but he was strong. I stepped on his foot and he uncovered my eyes and yelped in pain. I looked where Ian was looking and there he hung my dad lifeless dangling from our banister. I screamed it was girly but I screamed Ian pulled me into him so I couldn't see. He never let me go we sat there on the floor we didn't call anyone we didn't do anything he just held me as I cried. When my mom came home she looked down at me and Ian in confusion then she looked up and saw my dad she said oh my god and told Ian to take me to his house. For months people asked me how I was feeling but if you've ever gone through something like that you know there are no words. Ian never once asked me how I was feeling he was just there to cry on to give me a hug or just hold my hand for hours while we sat in silence on the porch.
Fast forward 7 more years and were in present day I'm 17 a junior in high school and my best friend is still Ian and will always be Ian. I also have my other best friend Tamera she moved on our block when we were 13 she was just like me and not like the other 13-year-old girls who were all into make-up and trying to get boyfriends. She showed up on my block like a force after Emily realized she wasn't like them, she tried to turn everyone at school on her like she did me but Tamera wasn't having it she put Emily in her place every time. Tamera was the best and only girlfriend I ever had. Every girl should have at least one girlfriend who else are you going to get to watch High School Musical with you that's not going to complain or laugh at you for knowing all the lyrics to every song.
"Anna wait for me" I heard Tamara yell from down the hall she ran to catch up to me.
"I got the flowers for D-Day and Ian said after our last class he'll pick us up in front" she said when she caught up.
"Ok but first we got to stop by the house and see if mom wants to go" I said.
"We ask her every year and she always says no."
"Yeah but what's the harm in asking" I replied.
"True, well see you in 45," she blew me a kiss and went to class. It was our last class of the day and I was ready to leave. D-Day was Ian, Tamera, and My tradition to go visit my dad's grave site on the day he hung himself. D stood for Dangle I know it's kind of sick but humor is a way to cope with pain and at 13 when I started this tradition I was past all the pain, sadness, and anger I was moving on to humor and I wanted to stay there it hurt less.
My mom found the name funny too but my grandma thought it was rude and insensitive. She was very uptight and she made mom put me on antidepressants when I was 11.I've actually been too scared to see what would happen if I went off them so I never have. As the bell rang I grabbed my things and raced out the door. Ian was already waiting in the front in his black Ford Focus he had football training 6th period and coach always let his players go 10 minutes early to shower and stuff but Ian didn't like the idea of public showers. My scrawny little Ian had gone away to camp the summer between 8th and 9th grade and came back muscular, tall, and had a slightly deeper voice. Everyone said he had become a man I avoided him for weeks because I was scared he would tell me he didn't want to be friends with me anymore.
The last day before our first day of high school he climbed up the tree to my window when I went in my room he grabbed me and pinned me to my bed and he said "Anna Contessa Smith I need you to stop avoiding me because tomorrow we have to go to high school a new unfamiliar place and I can't do it without you." And that day we caught up on everything he told me about camp I told him about how great of friends me and Tamera became and all the things we did. That Monday morning Ian, Tamera, and I walked through those high school doors and have been inseparable since.
"Hey Dorothy" he said Dorothy was his nickname for me and I called him Toto.
"Hi Toto" I got in the car and leaned to give him a hug.
"Eww you stink you should really think about showering after practice" I said.
"Whatever the ladies love my musk."
"No your musk makes the ladies delusional" Tamera got in the backseat and made and ugly face.
"Toto you stink" she said.
"Hi to you to Glinda" I know the wizard of oz nicknames are weird but we only use them once in a while we just all share a dislike for the movie. We drove to my house so I could ask my mom if she wanted to come with us and so Tamera could grabbed the flowers. I entered the house and announced I was home.
"Hi sweetie" my mom gave me a kiss and sat back down she was an author she had an office she wrote at but she was always working at home too.
"We're headed to the cemetery for D-Day you want to come" I asked.
"What did I tell you about that name" I heard a voice from behind me. I turned around it was my grandma I gave her a big hug.
"Hey grandma."
"Hi sweetie I'm glad to hear you still visit your dad."
"Every year" I said.
"Dorothy! Glinda the good witch is back with the flowers are we ready to go" Ian asked coming around the corner. When he saw my grandma he ran and gave her a hug and she gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"Boy you going to crush little old grandma with those big muscles" she said feeling his arms.
"Sorry Grams" he apologized giving her a kiss on her forehead and gave her a light kiss.
"Boy you smell like the great outdoors have you heard of a shower."
"I just came from football practice."
"Football who ever thought little Ian Cohen would be the quarterback at Capeside High."
"Kids you better get going if you're going to make it before the cemetery closes" my mom said.
"Oh yeah see you Grams." I gave her a kiss and so did Ian and we were off. When we got to the cemetery I put the flowers on the grave and we all sat down. Ian and I always fill my dad in on what has happened in the last year since we visited. We told him how Ian is quarterback and how I got voted Junior class president. Tamera was always there just for moral support her mom died when she was 5 from breast cancer so she knew the pain. We laughed and joked and talked to my dad until they were about to close I gave both Ian and Tamera big hugs before we left to thank them.
"Eww Anna you have grass stains on your pants," Emily said.
"I was playing soccer with my cousin Parker can I play with you guys," I asked.
"Ugh no you're gross and you don't have a Barbie" Rachel said.
