Two Lives, One Friendship, No Regrets - i (cont'd)
They are two friends. Nothing more, really.
The tension crawled back into his whole body when he look a quick glance over his shoulder. Had she fallen asleep?
He leaned over to check - her cheek was resting over her two folded hands. Her face was still pointed skyward, and her eyes were peacefully closed. She had fallen asleep.
It was getting late, he thought.
All the deadlines began to pop into his head. All the tasks he abandoned at his office were beginning to materialize as a never ending list in his brain. Tonight had definitely been a peaceful one. Even though it was only a two hour window of procrastination, he managed to shed some of the pressure that was weighing down his shoulders.
It was time to get back to the real world.
"Gi, wake up," he nudged her thigh.
She budged a little.
"Georgia! Wake up!" he pinched her nose with his thumb and index finger.
Snorting and gasping for air, her eyes popped open as she swatted his hand away from her face.
Her face scrunched up in a mock-scowl as his hand fell to his side, "What the hell, Feen!"
"Sorry Gi, we have to go now. It's really late and I have-"
"Oh right, sorry. Deadlines, right?"
"Yeah," he said.
"It's late anyway. Did I sleep for very long? What time is it?"
She'd literally forgotten about time and space after she closed her eyes for what she thought would be a 'second's rest'.
"It's almost 1am. It's still early and if I didn't have so much to do, I wouldn't mind staying here and letting you sleep," he responded.
"I guess it comes with the territory. We are adults now. Except instead of the curfew by parents- it's self-inflicted," she said.
"Sorry for falling asleep, Phoenix. I guess this past week has been tiring," she continued.
"Enough with the apologies already. It's really ok. In fairness, I actually felt some of the stress float away, but obviously, it's back now. We'll come back here again before the weather gets too cold, ok?"
She smiled, "I'll bring a blanket next time."
He smiled and shook his head non-noncommittally.
Rubbing the last bits of sleep out of her eyes, she slid down the side of the car landing neatly on her balls of her ballet-flat wearing feet.
"Hey Feen, you want me to drive next time?" she asked casually.
"And have your car wake up the neighborhood? No thanks, Gi."
"You're hurting my pride."
"It can take the hit, I'm almost certain!"
They were on the road now.
"What makes you say that?"
"Nothing, Gi. I was just kidding around."
"Oh..." She had to remember that when boys or men joked around there was no deeper meaning than the open obvious jibes they threw at you. She almost forgot.
Just in time they pulled up to her drive way.
"Thanks for driving and coming out tonight," she said.
"Thanks for inviting me," he said.
They gave each other a smile and a high five.
She went into the house remembering she needed to set her alarm.
He drove home with a new list at the forefront of his mind. He had been making the list of new proposals to present during the silent break on their drive home.
Looks like both of them won't be getting much sleep tonight.
