As per medical science, twitching right eye is a simple blinking disorder. Myokymia is the medical term used for eye twitching or eyelid tremors. It is caused due to the malfunctioning of certain nerves, that are responsible for muscle coordination, located at the base of the brain. Twitching right eye may also occur along with other symptoms like dry eyes. The other causes of myokymia include, nervous system disorders, staring at the computer or television screen for a long time, stress, fatigue, lack of proper sleep, consumption of too much caffeine and irritation in the cornea or in the conjunctiva of the eye. Some medical practitioners have also established that myokymia may be caused due to vitamin or potassium deficiency.
Most people confuse myokymia with Blepharospasm, which is a serious medical condition in which, there is rapid and involuntary blinking of the eyelids. The muscle spasms force the eyelid to close shut, which may also cause functional blindness. The treatment of myokymia, if it persists for more than two days would include, getting proper rest and sleep, eliminating the intake of caffeine and lubricating the eye with eye drops. Blepharospasm can be treated by undergoing blepharoplasty. If the twitching right eye persists for over a week, make sure you consult an ophthalmologist, to avoid further eye problems.
Twitching Right Eye - Superstitions and Omens
Now this is the interesting aspect associated with the twitching right eye. Superstitions and omens related to the twitching of the right eye, is followed by many cultures like those associated with itchy palms or hiccups. These superstitions are prominently believed in, even today.
The most popular superstition associated with twitching right eye comes from the Chinese culture. According to the Chinese, the twitching of the right eye in men signifies an important windfall or good luck, but a twitching left eye would signify ill luck. When it comes to right eye twitching in women, the belief is exactly the opposite, to that of twitching right eye in men. In women, a twitching right eye would signify bad luck, while a twitching left eye signifies good luck. There's this other one, as per which, a twitching right eye means someone is gossiping about you. They also have this very interesting superstition, which is based on the anatomical breakdown of the eye. A twitch in the lower right eyelid means, a good fortune is headed your way while one in the upper eyelid signifies financial loss. The Nigerians also follow similar superstitions.
Then we have the Indian version of these superstitions that are exactly opposite to the Chinese ones. For the Indians, a twitching right eye is a bad omen, signifying ill luck, whereas, as a twitching left eye signifies good luck. Then there's this one, as per which, a twitching right eye means, that there is going to be a birth in the family, very soon.
There are various other superstitions associated with a right eye twitch. The next time your right eye twitches, do not think about these and worry. Just relax and be optimistic, as these are mere superstitions that will harm you only if, you believe in them.
