Twists of Fate - Chapter 1

The Beginning.
*~*~*~*~*~*~
The board room was in an uproar. Everyone was arguing and yelling in panicked hysteria. Aurora Campbell simply watched in silence; as did Gabriel Stone, who sat at the head of the table. Aurora could tell he was listening to each argument simultaneously. A couple of minutes passed before he called for order. He simply stood to his feet and cleared his throat. The chaos died down to a deafening silence almost instantly.

It was the Year 2015 and the Universe was at war. Gods and Goddesses had gathered to discuss a plan of action. Five years prior, the three Fates had delivered the human race a death sentence claiming they were too far gone to be saved. The threat was brushed aside, thinking the daughters of Zeus were being dramatic, as they were known to be. This was before Gods began joining ranks with the Fates. Clotho, Lachesis, and Athropos had initiated a civil war, coupled with genocide. Each Fate had her own responsibility. One drew out the string of life, one measured the length of that life, and the last chose the way it would end by snipping the thread with her infamous shears. Death was the job of Athropos. Instead of offing the entire mortal race herself, Athropos was using the Gods' power to make the humans destroy each other.

Everyone in the room silently awaited Gabriel to speak. He stood tall, over all in the room. He had a formidable presence, making even the strongest cower in fear. He was an older man, but he was without a doubt, breathtaking. Gabriel had a regal aristocratic air to him, but he gave off a feeling of absolute security. Aurora looked up to the man she considered a father. Gabriel Stone was Zeus. He stood, poised perfectly, just staring at the faces before him. Then he spoke, the richness of his voice washing over the individuals in the room.

"I have just received news that Arthur, has claimed allegiance with the Fates."

Gasps were heard all around as everyone inhaled a sharp breath before once again raising their voices in alarm and despair. Aurora felt the shock as well. Arthur, or Ares, was the God of War and Battle. She could feel the hopelessness sink in as she looked around the room at the faces that mirrored her own. He lifted his hand again for silence, and continued.

"That was the bad news. There is something else I'd like to share. Athropos"

Before she could stop herself, Aurora snorted in derision. There was no one she hated more than Athropos, or Andreya as she called herself now. Dreadful name. Andreya had taken the life of her brother Marcus, out of spite and jealousy. Gabriel had always favored Aurora over his own daughters. Just the thought of her made Aurora seethe in anger. She heard a couple of pointed coughs that broke her concentration. It was then she realized she had interrupted him. She bowed her head reverently towards Gabriel.

"My sincerest apologies, please continue." she murmured respectfully.

He acknowledged her with an understanding nod and began again.

"I realize the new of Arthur's loyalty weighs heavy right now, but there is something else I'd like to share. Something that might resolve this matter entirely."

If they weren't listening before, they were now. Everyone tilted forward in their seats in curiosity as suspense filled the air.

"Athropos has a son. Living here among the mortals."

Aurora had expected something big, but not this magnanimous. The room was again was filled with voiced speculation and questioning whispers. An individual she couldn't see spoke up above the others.

"How can this be? How did we not know of this before?"

Gabriel listened to question after question. Aurora suspected he was trying to figure out a way to best relay the information in a positive light. She sat silently, waiting for him to continue. Eventually it became silent once more.

"Andreya has a son who has reached full maturity. She fathered this child with Eric."

He paused again, knowing this would have another effect on those before him. He was not wrong. Eric, or Eros, was the God of Lust. Aurora showed know outward emotion at all, but her mind was whirring at a mile a minute. She sat deep in thought. If this were true, this guy would have unspeakable power. As a descendant of Zeus, a son of the Fates no less, topped with a little bit of Eros? Devastating. Monumental. Curious on his plan to handle such a delicate situation, she stood.

"Silence," she ordered.

Aurora, the Goddess of Earth and Life had inherited her mother's power when she decided to pass them on to her to live as a mortal. On one of her trips to Earth, her mother, Demeter, fell in love with a man. She gave up her powers and immortality to Aurora. She assumed all of her mother's responsibilities as well. She may have been new to the job, but she made a name for herself. Her powers mixed with those of Demeter's made her a formidable opponent as the right hand of Gabriel.

Aurora stood at about 5' 8", and slim as a willow with subtle curves. Absolutely stunning in her current hairstyle of the day of long blonde waves with soft bangs that swooped across her forehead. She had high cheek bones that were tinted with a natural rose blush. She could change her appearance at will, as could many of the others. Here, among her kind, she was known as Aurora. But out and about, she preferred Rory. Less stuffy and blue-blood.

It might have taken a second longer than a command from Gabriel, but the result was the same. Rory then turned to Gabriel herself.

"What I think we would all like to know is what you plan for us to do with this information."

Murmurs of agreement were heard all around as she once again took her seat.

"Very well. I will answer all your questions if you can be patient with me. Andreya gave birth to a son thirty-two years ago, giving him the name Lysandros."

Rory inwardly smirked. Lysandros translated to "Liberty". How fitting. She already hated this guy. As if hearing her thoughts, Gabriel glanced at her slightly amused.

"I suspect that he has no idea of his true identity. I believe that Andreya hid him among the mortals out of shame and to protect him. The news that one of the Fates had been corrupted by Eros would have had serious ramifications. The boy could have been used as leverage against her to tamper with Fate."

Again, the same voice came from the back.

"You have known of this son all along?"

Gabriel seemed bored by the question.

"How would I not know I have a grandson? I believe the question you meant to ask is, 'Why I did I not tell anyone?' First let me ask you this. For what purpose would the information have served until now? It is not in me to publicly humiliate my daughter or endanger either of them for no reason."

Rory gave an understanding nod.

"As for my plan, I'm going to send someone to fetch him. To inform him of his identity and sway him to our side. I'm going to be sending Aurora to prepare him for our use."

Now it was her turn to voice her shock and denial.

"You've got to be kidding me," she protested.

Gabriel merely lifted an eyebrow.

"Surely there is someone else, who is more suited to the job."

"You are more than welcome to decline the responsibility, Aurora," he replied , knowing she wouldn't.

She also knew, she would deny him nothing.

"I accept," she grumbled.

As the grandson of Zeus, she would show him respect. That didn't mean she had to like him. This Lysandros was in for a rude awakening. For all she knew, he was probably fat and ugly with uneven tufts of facial hair. She knew deep down, it wouldn't be possible. With his genes, he wouldn't be anything short of heart-stopping.
