Twists of Fate - Chapter 8
The Control.
Logan followed them in, keeping a tight leash on the jealous fury ripping at his composure with lethal claws. Arthur led her into a living room area dimly lit by a stone fireplace, sitting on a plush love seat motioning her to join him. The only other available seat was a leather armchair almost ten feet away, only appealing due to the table of fancy liquor in faceted glass bottles. He took a seat, helping himself to the strongest drink he could reach and settled in to watch the show.
"I've missed you so," Rory purred, deliberately lowering her voice to a seductive whisper.
Rory had dated Arthur on and off but due to his unpredictable mood swings and extreme flair for the dramatic they had fought constantly. Not to say they hadn’t loved deeply. She still felt something for Arthur and wished she didn’t have to lead him on like this. It definitely wasn’t easy with Logan sitting right there watching her like a hawk. She could practically feel the waves of resentment radiating from his seat across the room.
"You're the one that left remember?" Arthur replied gently.
"I always told you it was a mistake," she said, her eyes filling up with tears.
"And I always told you the door was always open. That hasn't changed."
Rory wiped her eyes delicately on the back of her hand. She might be overplaying it but there were feelings still there. Their relationship had run its course. There had been a point in time when she thought they were perfect for each other, but that was just the problem. She had been too blinded to see that it just wasn't meant to be. They were good together, but there wasn't that feeling of being complete. She cared deeply for him but she couldn’t live a lie. Not to mention no one had approved of their relationship. Not even Gabriel.
"You know this can't be, Artie. Moreover, you know that is not why I'm here."
"I know," he sighed, lifting her hand for a kiss.
Logan was gripping the snifter so hard he was surprised the glass didn’t shatter in his hand.
"Why would you join her? You know what she did to me and you of all people should know how this feels. Why would you do this to me? You had to know how I would react."
Artie lifted his hand and cupped her cheek tenderly.
"It wasn't about you. I believe in this cause. The world is full of evil. Believe me; of all people, I can say this with authority. I know what they are capable of. They will end up destroying themselves. We can do this and start fresh. Can you imagine a new world? A beautiful utopia with none of the hate. Just think of it, my love."
"It is my duty to protect this earth and those who live on it. Good and evil. They balance each other out. It is not our place to intervene. Mortals were given the choice to live their lives the according to their wishes. I will not stand by and watch them do this. Even if I have to go through you to stop them. Can't you see the good in the world? It's there, Artie. The world is beautiful, I can guarantee that. Please tell me it’s not too late to change your mind?" She prompted pleadingly.
Rory watched as Arthur seemed to consider her offer.
"I have one condition. Do you remember the seventh day of October twelve years ago?"
Rory nodded silently.
Arthur leaned forward, brushed away the stray curl that had fallen over her eye and kissed her again. The glass was unable to take anymore of the pressure from Logan's fist. It shattered into pieces, falling to the carpet. The fire from the hearth glittered off the broken bits covered in scarlet blood. He swore silently, wishing them to hell as he found his way out the way they came.
How could she? She threw herself on him, offering everything. Did she have no dignity or self respect? What the hell happened in October? Wishing he'd stuck around to find out, he clenched his fists sucking in the cool night air, hoping somehow it would calm him. Obviously anything he thought of her before was completely off base. Before his temper had settled to a manageable level, he heard the front door open and turned to watch the encore.
"You'll consider my offer? It won't last long, Aurora. You know I've
always loved you."
She nodded and turned away. Arthur stood for a few moments just watching before returning inside. Once the door closed behind him, the last thread of Logan's control snapped.
Rory almost flinched as she figuratively had to dodge the daggers being hurled at her from his dark glittering eyes. This matter had to dealt with delicately.
"What the hell was that, Rory? Or is it Aurora? You better start explaining yourself," Logan bit out.
Rory simply walked towards him grabbing his arm and transporting them back to the clearing before he made a scene in front of Arthur's estate. She watched as he keeled over, trying to catch his breath. When he looked up, his eyes were black with murder. She took an instinctive step back out of strategy, not fear. She needed a plan to bring him down before he self-destructed.
"Lysandros-"
Not the right opening move, she regretted silently as he practically roared in anger. His hair turned into a deep blood red and the earth began to tremble under their feet. Well this was good news, they'd found out how to trigger his powers. Bad news: This was beyond his control. She had a small window of time before he would be too far gone. She felt the small stirrings of panic as the air began to whip around them; leaves and debris flying everywhere.
Logan was blind to everything but the rage. He didn't feel himself losing his grip. All he felt was the power. Drunk with it, he turned to her, needing an outlet.
Running on instinct, there was only one clear solution left to her.
She kissed him.
