The Razzie Awards have managed to garner just enough of the entertainment media’s attention over the years to stay relevant. But this year, the anti-Oscar awards decided to focus most of their playful venom on the Twilight Saga and its mega-stars. In doing so, the Razzies may have stumbled onto a formula that could prove highly lucrative if any of the stars of the series decide to show up to accept their awards.
By managing to attach its name to one of the biggest movie franchises in history, the Razzies are already sure to increase their exposure and name recognition exponentially. The Golden Raspberry Awards started as a personal joke of writer J. B. Wilson in 1980 at his home in Los Angeles. Through savvy viral marketing and scheduling his "awards show" for the night before the Academy Awards, Wilson’s joke became a wildly successful faux-Awards Show.
Eventually, Hollywood and the mainstream press took notice of Wilson’s tongue-in-cheek ceremony and over the years he’s managed to attract several A-list performers to accept Razzie awards in person. With this year’s show seemingly focused squarely on Twilight, it’s likely that a new generation of movie fans will be introduced to the Golden Raspberry for the very first time. Look for social media to light up with cries of injustice at the thought of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart being ridiculed for their acting ability, or lack thereof. Yet if either were to appear to accept an award, it would likely be considered the greatest moment in Razzies history.
