Twilight Author Laments Media Obsession with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson

Stephenie Meyer said she is unsure whether Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart would have accepted their Twilight roles if they knew then what they know now.
Fame has a price - and global super-fame has a much larger price. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are two of the most recognizable celebrities in the world, and they owe the vast majority of their fame and success to their leading roles in the four films of the Twilight Saga. The characters created by Twilight author Stephenie Meyers were beloved by millions of fans long before the film rights were purchased. But now that the books have been made into films, Bella Swan and Edward Cullen are now "real people" in the minds of millions - and those "real people" are Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

Of course, the fact that the actors also have an off-screen romance makes things that much more tempting for the entertainment media, but the reason their spotlights are so intense is because of Twilight - not because of their relationship. In a recent interview with The Times of London, Meyer said she felt guilty because of the intensity of the media’s focus on Pattinson and Stewart. Meyer notes that neither Pattinson nor Stewart are the types of actors who are hungry for fame - and certainly not at the level they are currently experiencing. She explained, "At the same time - and this is where the guilt comes from - it's created this nice, peaceful place for me. They took all of my heat, which I feel bad about. If they had the choice, I've no idea if they'd even do Twilight again. I just don't know. I think this has all come at a heavy price.''

Meyer’s correct that she has been spared much of the media scrutiny that follows the stars of her films, but that’s always the way things work in Hollywood. Celebrity gossip sells and that’s driven by the faces of Hollywood - not the authors of the books that result in box-office smash movies. Stewart and Pattinson’s relationship appears to be on the rocks at the moment, but they’ll be dealing with the fame problem for years to come.
