What is a Tuxedo Cat?
As mentioned above, there is no specific breed in the name of tuxedo cats. The term refers to those cats with a specific color pattern on their coat, which appears like a tuxedo. In order to be considered as a tuxedo cat, the feline must have a solid black coat with white patches on the paws, belly, chest, throat and chin. The white patches must be limited to those regions. These cats can be easily identified with their special coat pattern and the white-colored 'V' on their chest. Tuxedo cats are also known as black mask cats, as they have black coloration around their eyes, that looks like masks. In some regions, these cats are known as 'Jellicle' cats, 'Billicat', etc.
Tuxedo Cat Breeds
Now, you know that tuxedo cats do not represent a breed, but are known in that name, due to their coat pattern. Many cat breeds have tuxedos, which are commonly seen in both domestic short hair and long hair varieties. Some of those cat breeds which have tuxedos are American Short hair, British Short hair, Manx, Cornish Rex, Devon Rex, Scottish Fold, Persian, Bombay, etc. You can find tuxedo cats in mixed breeds too.

Even though, personality traits have nothing to do with coat pattern, it is a common belief that tuxedo cats are more friendly, smart, affectionate, vocal and intelligent. 'Sylvester', the cartoon cat character in Looney Tunes, is depicted as a tuxedo.

In general, tuxedo cat behavior is found to be very friendly and affectionate, but, it can very with breeds. The popularity of tuxedo cats can be traced back to the time of ancient Egyptians, as the cat pictures depicted in the royal tombs of Egypt are of tuxedo cats. It is said that famous personalities, like, William Shakespeare, Beethoven and Sir Isaac Newton owned tuxedo cats. Another interesting fact about these cats is that, it was a tuxedo cat (named Sparky), that inherited over 6.3 million dollars in 1998. This was the largest inheritance ever left for a cat.
