Turkish Coffee Recipe

Turkish coffee is very much different in taste than regular coffee and once you have tasted this fabulous cup of coffee, you will find it difficult to go back to drinking any other coffee. It tastes different because the way it is prepared is very unique. It is prepared in a small coffee pot that is called an ibrik. Sugar is added when the coffee is brewing in the pot unlike regular coffee where sugar is added later. Special coffee beans that are from Turkey are used for making Turkish coffee. To get the taste of authentic Turkish coffee, it is best that you roast the Turkish coffee beans yourself before grinding them to a powder. You also need a Turkish coffee grinder to roast the coffee beans as the regular coffee grinders won't be able to grind the beans into a fine powder. Making Turkish coffee is very easy and here we will guide you on how to make Turkish coffee.

Basic Turkish Coffee

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon finely ground Turkish coffee
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cardamom pod
Method

Bring water to boil in a small coffee pot. Remove the coffee pot from heat and add the freshly grounded coffee along with the cardamom pod. Place the coffee pot back to heat and allow it to come to a gentle boil. When foam comes to the top, remove from heat. Pour the Turkish coffee into small teacups and allow it to sit for sometime so that the coffee grounds settle at the bottom of the cup. Turkish coffee drink is always served with foam on top.

Turkish Coffee with Milk

Ingredients
  • 2 teaspoons of ground Turkish coffee
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
Method

In a coffee pot, add the water and milk and let it come to a boil over medium heat. Remove from heat and add the ground Turkish coffee into the pot and also add the sugar. Allow the mixture to come to a boil until you see froth appearing on top of the pot. Remove pot away from flame and allow the froth to subside. Bring the pot back to boil till you get froth again. Pour the Turkish coffee into small tea cups and wait for a minute to allow the coffee grounds to settle at the bottom.

Turkish Coffee with Cognac

Ingredients
  • 2 teaspoons ground Turkish coffee
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon cognac
Method

Add water to the coffee pot and allow it to come to a boil. Remove the coffee pot from the flame and add the freshly ground Turkish coffee along with the sugar. Place the pot back to the flame and allow the coffee to come to a boil so that froth is produced on top. Move the coffee pot away from the flame to allow the froth to subside. Place the pot back o the flame and allow it to froth again. Add the cognac into the coffee pot before pouring it in small cups. Wait for a minute to let the sediments settle at the bottom before serving.

Traditionally, Turkish coffee was prepared without adding milk or any other additives. You can concoct your very own personalized brew by adding vanilla extract, cinnamon or any liquor of your choice.
