Tulip Poplar Tree

The Tulip poplar tree is one of the two species that belongs to the family Magnoliaceae or magnolia, and is native to North America. Another species of the tulip poplar tree is liriodendron chinese, which is native to China and Vietnam. It is also commonly known as the tulip tree, yellow poplar and liriodendron tulipifera. It is known as tulip poplar mainly because of the resemblance of the flowers to tulips. It is a huge tree and is not related to the poplar tree. This tree is great for yards and landscaping purposes. Identifying this tree is very easy, as it can be recognized by its massive size and height.

Tulip Poplar Identification

As has been mentioned already, it is a large shady tree that can reach a height of about 150 to 165 feet. With such height, they can easily surpass other surrounding trees, sometimes even maple and oak trees. Many of them reach a height of more than 170 feet. These giant and magnificent trees can also be identified by the shape of their large and unique leaves. Tulip poplar leaves are usually found with four lobes and a pointed apex. These characteristic lobes are deeper in the younger trees as compared to the matured ones. The leaves of this tree are quite large with a length of 8-22 cm and a width of 6-25 cm.

Its beautiful flowers are bright yellow in color with orange bands that appear in May and June. A typical tulip poplar flower is about 3 to 10cms in diameter with nine petals. Tulip poplar flowers are known to have a faint smell of cucumbers. The tree generally takes almost 15 years for flowering. It also produces cone-shaped fruits, which are actually an aggregate of samaras.

This tree is mainly known and liked for its beauty in the fall, as while all the other trees start to lose their foliage and turn brown in fall, this tree changes its color from fresh green to golden-yellow and creates a spectacular sight. For this reason, it is a preferred option for landscaping. It is a very popular tree in many parts of the United States and is recognized as the state tree of Tennessee, Indiana and Kentucky. Yellow poplar or tulip poplar wood is used for making inexpensive furniture, cabinet and furniture framing and also for making sub-surfaces for veneering.

How to Grow Tulip Poplar Tree?

This tree grows very rapidly, reaching a height of about 15 to 20 feet within a short period of 6 to 8 years. You can plant this tree in spring, either by using the seeds or any vegetative part. However, flowering will be earlier in grafted plants than those grown from seeds. A wet, but well-drained and slightly acidic soil is ideal for its growth, though it can also tolerate slightly alkaline and salty soils. It prefers temperate climates and places partly exposed to sunlight. It needs water in a moderate amount, so avoid excessive watering. Regular pruning is important to maintain its shape, which tends to become irregular at maturity from a regular oval or conical shape.

The tulip poplar tree is usually resistant to a large number of diseases and insects. However, you may occasionally find some common tulip tree diseases like cankers, leaf spot, powdery mildew, verticillium wilt and sooty mold. Besides these, this tree may attract some undesirable insects like aphids, bees and wasps. But in spite of all these disadvantages, it has a great addition to a yard due to its majestic look.
