Chapter 4
I opened the door as quietly as I could and when I saw no one I opened the door wider so I could check the whole room. It was empty too, or so I thought...
As I walked in I saw a movement under the bed. I walked farther into the room and to my left there was a door, I started walking towards it when I saw a movement to my right and it wasn't under the bed this time. I realized that there was a walk in closet. So I still kept on going to the other door. I heard the shuffle of someone moving but pretended to be oblivious to it. As I was opening the door, I turned and aimed my gun to the person in front of me.
"Stop right there." I said. The person stopped, then I felt a person behind me and I heard the unmistakable sound of a gun cocking. Adrenaline started rushing through my veins now.
"Drop the gun on the ground." Said the voice from behind me. "Now!" I started putting my gun down when I felt the gun touch my head. So I pretended to fall and laid on the floor.
"Get up!" the man said. I turned and laid on my back. I saw the man with the gun right next to my right leg. I started to get up when I grabbed the mans legs and pulled. The gun went off next and probably hit the roof but I wasn't paying attention, the guys gun had flown out of his hand when he fell so I turned around to the other person and kicked his legs from under him. I turned for my gun when I felt a hand on my leg and I fell.
When I opened my eyes my gun was right in front of me. So I grabbed it and turned around just as the man was getting up. I kicked him with my right leg which sent pain running through my leg. The guy fell and just as I was getting up the lights turned on and three officers rushed into the room. Both guys just sat there with stupefied looks on their faces. Two of the officers went to the guys and cuffed them. I was just standing there adrenaline pumping in my veins when I remembered the movement under the bed. So I went next to it and looked under neath to see a woman and boy there with frightened looks on their faces.
"It's okay. You can come out now." I told them and held out my hand to the woman. Both the woman and boy were okay but the body that was in the kitchen was the woman's husband. I found out that the woman's name was Carrie and the boy's was Matthew . The men were robbers and when Jake(The father) got in their way they killed him. When Carrie heard the shot she grabbed Matthew and they hid under the bed. I took them outside and to the paramedics. I looked around but didn't see Marc anywhere, I was glad he was gone. It was past midnight when everyone finally left. Only I was left and a squad car that would take me to Marc's house to get Kaitlyn. I gave one last look around the house and when I went outside, there he was. He was standing next to his car. I walked towards him and stopped when I was about two feet away from him.
"I thought you went home." I told him.
"No I just got out of the way." he said.
"Oh." I said. He then turned around and opened the car door for me. I looked at him for a second then got into the car. I watched him go around to his side then I put my head back and closed my eyes. I didn't think I could fall asleep in less than a minute but I guess I did, because the next time I woke up I was in his arms and he was carrying me up some stairs but I didn't pay enough attention to where he was going. I felt him lower me somewhere and when I opened my eyes I was in a room and as soon as my head hit the pillow I was under.
*****
I woke up to sunlight hitting my face. I turned and felt a body next to mine. I opened my eyes and saw Kaitlyn sleeping peacefully. I levered myself up and looked around the room. The door was closed and the window was big and the sun was straight ahead. An open door presented a bathroom done in a pale yellow. The room itself was painted a soft beige color. I got up and went to the bathroom and freshened up. I checked on Kait and she was still sleeping so I got my shoes and left the room.
I didn't even know where to go because there were two staircases each on either side of the hallway. I turned left and went down the stairs. I found myself in a big open room that appeared to be the living room. I saw two doors and decided to go to the one ahead of me. I reached the door and was about to open it when I heard voices coming from inside. So I stepped back and went to the other door. I opened this one and I found myself in the hallway where I had come in the day before. I walked forward and heard voices on the end of the hallway. When I walked in I saw Alex, Layla and Cassie sitting on a table having breakfast. I was about to turn and leave when Layla turned and saw me.
"Come in." she said, then Alex raised his head and saw me.
"I thought you would sleep longer." he said.
"I'm an early riser." I told him walking into the room more.
"Come on, sit down." He told me. So I sat down. But I wasn't hungry. So I just sat there.
"Cass, what have you been doing all these years?" Alex asked me.
"Nothing." I told him not looking at him. Did I tell him why I really left? Or did I just keep lying to him? I chose lying to him was best because if I really told him why I had stayed away he would be in danger.
"How old is Kaitlyn?" Layla asked me.
"She's turning four in two weeks." I told her.
"Is it just you? Or are you with her father?" She asked me.
"Layla." Alex said.
"No it's okay Alex." I told him. "It's only me." I told her.
"Oh." she said. Then, "He didn't want her?"
"Layla, stop." Alex said this time. I looked at him then turned to her.
"He doesn't know about her. I never had the chance to tell him. When I found out I was pregnant it was too late." I said. "I have to go and check on Kait." I told them and when I turned around, I saw Marc.
His eyes said all I needed to know he had listened to our conversation. He looked dumbfounded. I walked past him in a hurry going the way I had come down. As I got to the stairs, I got a cramp on my right leg and I sat there rubbing it for a minute or two. I didn't think he had fallowed me or else he would have been there already. So when his voice came out of nowhere I jumped and almost rolled down the stairs. I would have if he hadn't grabbed me.
"We need to talk." he had said
.
"I can't I need to get Kait and take her home." I said, my heart was in overdrive I thought it was going to pound out of my chest.
"You can wait ten more minutes." he said and without waiting for my answer he dragged me down the stairs and to the room where I had heard voices. He opened the door and I saw that it was an office. He let me go after he had closed the door. I stood there looking at him, looking t me. Finally he moved and gestured to a chair.
"Sit down." he said to me. I didn't want to sit I wanted to get out of there.
"I don't want to sit down." I told him stubbornly.
"Sit down, Cassidy." he spoke to me as if I were still a little girl. So I lifted my chin and looked at him with what I thought was my haughty look. "Okay." he said and walked right towards me and stopped less than a foot away from me. "Why?" was all he said to me. I knew what he was asking about but I decided to play dumb.
"Why what?" I said tilting my head to the side as if considering his question.
"Don't act dumb. Why didn't you tell me you were pregnant when we were together? As a matter of fact, why the hell did you leave in the first place?" he almost yelled it out. I didn't know how to answer him. Did I tell him lies or the truth? Would he hate me if I lied and told him something to hurt him? So I decided to tell him half of the truth.
"I didn't know I was pregnant when I left, I found out about two weeks after I left." I told him truthfully.
"Okay. So why did you leave?" he asked again.
I didn't know how to answer that one. Did I lie to him like I did Alex? Did I tell him the truth? No I couldn't tell him the truth, he would be in danger if I ever told him the real truth. So I lied to him, even though my heart broke a little for lying to him. As I took a breath to tell him, there was a knock on the door. The man that had opened the door for me yesterday started to walk in, but before he could, and a dark haired woman came striding forward looking at Marc with a smile on her face. She didn't even look at me and went straight into his arms and kissed him...
