Trellis Design

When you have a garden, you would love people to compliment on the way you have maintained it, the trees and plants you have planted, the layout, etc. But, this is possible only if you give them something to compliment about. Garden Trellis

The trellis can come in various shapes and designs. Given below are some common design ideas:

• Obelisks: These trellises are also known as the pyramid trellis because of their shape. They are the most popular among all the designs. The largest of the obelisk trellis stands at least 6 feet above the ground. They can be constructed from various materials. But wood is the main thing that's used the most. If you want to give your trellis a natural look, maybe you could just stain it or coat it with any kind of sealant. You can also color it if you want to. If you get a trellis which is made out of rust-free materials, then it will last you a long time.
• Freestanding Patio Trellis: This is another good trellis design idea. They are portable, i.e. they can be moved from one place to another without any problem. You can place them in your garden, or in your backyard or maybe on the patio. They are very colorful, hence, they can also be used as outdoor privacy screens.
• Pole Trellis: If you have any long pole lying about, then just plant it in the garden. Your climber will have something to support itself on. You can also decorate the top of the pole to make it look even more impressive. Place 2 or 3 such poles against a wall, and you will have a peacock-spreading-its-tail like look. Grow varieties of plant on it.
• Relaxing Wooden Trellis: Just attach a relaxing seat or a bench with a wooden trellis and you have your own trellis with a seat. You can relax here on a beautiful evening, or read a book etc. This idea gets even better. You can support a climbing tree or plant with edible fruits maybe like peas, or tomatoes or grapes, etc., against this trellis. Just sit and read on the trellis seat and enjoy the fruit as well.
• Grape Trellis: These trellises, as the name suggests, are used to support the grape vines. Grape trellis allows you to grow more grapes in a very small space. This kind of design will be useful to you if you are a grape dealer. It is a great design for them.
• Divider: Separate the various sections of your garden maybe your kitchen garden or your flower garden, using this design. It surely improves the look of your garden, provided you set it up properly.

Want some more ideas, then you can have trellis designed in the shape of your favorite animal, say maybe a dog or a deer, or even a rabbit. You can also use the trellis to build a small tunnel or playhouse for your kids. They would surely love it.

Of course, you have to keep in mind your garden and the kind of plants you are going to support with it. A garden with a trellis which does not go with the landscape, will spoil the entire look of the garden. So take care while planning.

You can also build a garden trellis on your own using the waste materials lying around at home, like a broken ladder, an old tennis racket, or some poles, etc. Instead of just letting them clutter your house, make good use of them. Just put the ladder against a wall, paint it using some bright colors and let the climbing plants wrap themselves around it. Or if you have an old, torn tennis racket which you have been meaning to throw away, but never did, plant it in a pot which has a climbing plant. They will use the racket as a support to climb. For the poles, you can tie them up in the form of a tepee and let the plants grow. Even wrought iron trellises are a popular choice in many gardens. Thus, with these trellis ideas, not only will you save some money, but you also get rid of all the old stuff.

Trellis Wallpaper

Nowadays, wallpapers have become very common, thanks to William Morris (1834-96), an architect and painter. He and his friends were the first ones to try their hands at the trellis wallpaper. It was drawn using the medieval theme, with square flowerbeds, which was enclosed with a wattle trellises for roses. Some of the artists also drew birds on it. Later on, however, Morris's design wallpaper became very complex.
