Treatment for Sociopath
Do you have a friend or a family member who has some behavioral problems like constant lying, stealing, no respect for others emotions, etc? If so, there are high chances that he or she is a sociopath. Sociopathy is a serious mental disorder, however with proper treatment a sociopath can be cured. Let us look at some of the methods of treating a sociopath.
Causes
The reason for a person becoming a sociopath or a psychopath is not very clearly known. Some experts believe that genetics play an important role in a person becoming a sociopath. If one of the parent is a sociopath, there are high chances of the child becoming a sociopath. Environmental factors can also be a reason for a person becoming a sociopath. Children of individuals who have antisocial personality disorder, may not receive love and affection for their parents during childhood, and this may be a reason for them becoming sociopaths. Even a traumatic incident that a person experienced during childhood can turn him or her into a sociopath.
Treatment
It is very important to recognize a sociopath in the society and especially if he or she is a part of your life. Although sociopaths can be a danger to the society, they can be cured with the help of proper treatment.
There are a number of ways in which a psychopath can be treated. However, the most important factor for the treatment to begin is that the sociopath should understand that he or she has a problem. As guilt is an emotion that rarely comes to a sociopath, this can be a difficult task. Another problem that can arise is the relationship between the patient and the doctor. Usually, sociopaths are incapable of maintaining close relationships and for the therapy to have fruitful results, it is necessary that a bond should be developed between the two. Due to the sociopaths basic nature of being deceitful, they may be able to manipulate the doctor about their recovery.
Once a sociopath fully understands his problem, he can be treated, but its effectiveness would be different from individual to individual. One important thing to remember is that there is no specific treatment for sociopaths and every individual goes through a treatment procedure according to his or her age, medical background, severity of the disorder and also the possible presence of some other ailments. Antisocial personality disorder can be treated with the help of therapies, medicines or certain physical treatments. Most of the time it would be a combination of all the three.
The three types of therapies that can be administered on a sociopath are behavioral, cognitive and psychotherapy. Behavioral psychologists believe that the traits of a sociopath are not inborn, but are learned due to lack of discipline during childhood. A behavioral therapist helps in reconditioning the learned behavior in a sociopath and tries to teach him or her behaviors that would help them to live and cope in a society.
In cognitive therapy, the therapist tries to understand the thoughts and feelings in a sociopath, which he believes are the main cause of his antisocial personality. He or she is taught skills to change unacceptable behavior like lying, stealing, anger, etc.
Psychotherapists believe that a sociopath has these problems due to some earlier traumatic experience during childhood, and so tries to find and understand this deep-rooted problem in the inner conscience of the person.
There are actually no particular medicines that can treat a sociopath. However, sometimes medicines are given to the patients to treat alcohol addiction or depression. However, drugs can have their own negative effects as there are chances that the person may become addicted to them.
Sometimes, physical treatments like shock therapy and neurosurgery are also used to treat sociopaths. However, these treatments are not very common and are not recommended much. Such treatments are usually used with people who have a chronic mental disorder or people who have a deformity in the brain.
It may be difficult to understand and treat a sociopath, but it is not an impossible task. Family members and therapists should have a lot of patience while treating an individual to see desirable changes in him or her. The chances of effective treatment are high if it is given at the onset of such behavior. If children show signs of aggression and violence, it would be beneficial to take them to a specialist, so that instead of becoming sociopaths, they become loving and caring adults.
