Attraction of Udaipur

I'm quite romantic at heart and a keen traveler. So my bags are always ready to embark on a journey that gives me lifetime memories. But this time when my husband initiated and planned our trip to Udaipur in Rajasthan, I was pleasantly surprised. The tickets were in my hands and I's flying after two days to one of the most romantic destinations in India. I was happy, I must say, rather really excited. Our two day trip was a real fun as we spent quality time amidst nature and experienced the cultural and monumental heritage of Rajasthan. I had read about this City of Lakes but never been there may be that is why I was so excited to feel and imbibe the beauty of lakes in me.

First Day of Our Tour

Our first day in Udaipur was thrilling. Our flight landed and as we already had our bookings done in advance, we went straight to our hotel, the Lake Palace Hotel, and checked in. The hotel was itself an attraction for me. It is actually a palace built by Mahrana Jagat Singh II and covers whole island. It is a heritage hotel now that is an attraction for tourists like me. Apparently floating on lake waters of Lake Pichola, it is one of the most spectacular hotels of world. I rushed into the room to have a superb view of Lake Pichola from the room. What a marvelous sight it was! I wanted to see more and so my husband and I set out for happy sightseeing.

Our first site was Lake Pichola itself. Our tour guide, Mohanlal, told us that the lake was enlarged by Maharana Udai Singh II after he founded the city. The dam, Badipol, built on the lake was almost dry and so we walked up to the island palaces from the shore. I had goose pimples when Mohanlal told me that crocodiles inhabit at remote places of the lake.

Out in the lake are two island Palaces – the Jagniwas (Lake Palace Hotel) and Jagmandir. We took a boat cruise from Bansi ghat and enjoyed a ride to the Jagmandir Island. It is said that Shah Jahan took inspiration from this palace to build Taj Mahal when he stayed here while leading a revolt against his father Jehangir. Anyways, I was more interested in the beautiful stone carvings of the island. The carvings had made stone elephants lifelike. The chattri of blue grey stone was specially charming.

There was no wedding nor any concert, otherwise this ancient island palace reverberates amidst trees, flowers, and courtyards under moonlit sky. I was imagining myself as a heroine who was in the company of her lover under the moonlit sky and someone was playing piano in the background and so we could dance lightly on the tunes, when my husband asked me to proceed for further sightseeing. I left the heroine part of mine there and proceeded for the next attraction.

Mohanlal next took us to the impressive City Palace. We were amazed to see the balconies, towers and copulas towering over the lake. It is undoubtedly one of the largest palace of Rajasthan with a vast and beautiful facade. The northern side of the palace took us to the museum and we went to the armory that housed a large and varied collection of artefacts. The old weapons in the museum attracted me at once ans particularly a fatal two pronged sword.

Taking Ganesha Deori, the entrance to the museum, we went to Rajya Anagn, the royal courtyard where Udai Singh met a sage who said to establish the city. The palace we saw had exquisitely done halls including Manak Mahal, Krishna Vilas, Moti Mahal, Chini Mahal, Surya Chopar, Durbar Hall, Zenana Mahal. The place is a good place to see mirror work, glass work and collection of miniature paintings. It is was enough or that day and so we returned to the hotel room for our next day sightseeing tour.

Second Day of Our Tour

Our next day tour started with Jagdish Temple which is very close to City Palace. It is spectacularly carved Indo Aryan temple, that was built by Mahrajah Jagat Singh. We offered our prayers to the stone image of Lord Vishnu enshrined here as Jagannatha, the Lord of Universe.

We were driven to Sajjan Niwas Garden that surprised us with beds of flowers. The large gulab bagh, the rose garden, overwhelmed us. Such a lovely site it was that we were lost in its beauty for long. We then moved to Crystal Gallery that houses rare crystals that Maharajah Sajjan Singh and imported from Engalnd. Before the arrival of the shipment, the king died and these were packed till 110 years. We were baffled to see the collection of sofas, chairs, tables and even beds.

The adventure side of mine wanted something more exciting and so we took horse riding excursions around Udaipur and it was a real pleasure. The horse safari here is a good idea. It was late in the evening and we had ot board our flight. We came back to the hotel and rushed to airport. From the window pane of my plane I bade goodbye to the amazing city of Udaipur.
