Travel Safety for Children in the UK

Travel child seats are used for your childs comfort as well as safety. Do you know how to make sure your child is safe and how to maximise their safety whilst travelling? See some tips below:

1. Choose a car travel seat that is suitable for your kids weight and size otherwise the child seat is not suitable for them.

2. You need to make sure you read the full instruction manual prior to installing the child seat. The manual should give you some clear easy to follow instructions on how to fit the child travel car seat.

3. Allow plenty of time when fitting the infant travel seat to ensure it is fitted correctly. Hurrying the process could mean missing very important parts of the installation. Take your time to ensure better installation.

4. Always try to use the safest part of the car to install the travel child seats to. If the child car seat is approved to be used with the sort of seat belt that is in the middle rear seat of the car, then this is the safest position in your car for your child. The position which is the next safest is the left side rear seat of the car (the seat behind the front passenger seat) because it is on the opposite side of cars on the road..

5. It is against the law to position a rear facing child seat in the front passenger seat of your car when the airbag is turned on. Even if your airbag is switched off (front passenger seat airbag) the rear of the car is still much safer for your child in their rear facing seat to be.

6. Slip your fingers in between your infant and the harness seat belt to check it is tight enough. Only one or two of your fingers should be able to fit through. If you can easily fit more fingers behind the harness then it is too slack.

7. After the infant seat is installed it should not move any more than an inch to any direction. If the child car seat doesn't seem secure enough then re-tighten the seat belt and give the seat another shake to check the movement. After re-tightening and retesting your childs car seat and you still think it is not secured tight enough, take it to a good local garage for them to inspect it for you.
