Chapter 5

I followed him into the hall, into an open living room and kitchen, a bar between them. The kitchen was filled with so much white, I wondered if the guy had a weird thing for the color. The couches in the living room were a deep red, the walls a dark gold color. It looked really good, actually.

I heard laughter from the kitchen, along with a little bit of music, and saw a girl dressed in all black dancing around with a little girl, about five. They were making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. A little boy ran through the kitchen to the living room, toy plane in his hand. He was making little whoosh sounds, and stopped only for a second to shout, very loudly, "Hey, dad!"

"Hey, Gregger," Caleb said, grinning, and the boy ran off. "Watchya making this morning, Phoenix?" he asked.

"My specialty," the girl clad in black, Phoenix, grinned. She turned up the radio a bit, and her and the little girl danced around, Phoenix with a butter knife with peanut butter on it in her hand. I started grinning. They were dancing around to veggie tales songs. If it doesn’t have a tail, it’s not a monkey sang Larry from the speakers. even if it has a monkey kind of shape…if it doesn’t have a tail, it’s not a monkey, ifitdoesn’thaveatailit’snotamonkey,it’sanape. The little girl was giggling and laughing along with Phoenix. I laughed, and saw Caleb look at me with a smile on his face.

"What?" I grinned.

"Nothing." He said.

Phoenix looked up and saw me standing beside Caleb. Her left eyebrow rose very slowly, in question to my presence. I shrugged and walked forward, grabbing myself two pieces of bread, and she looked from me to Caleb for a minute or so.

"What’s your name?" Phoenix asked.

"Laine," I said, grabbing the jelly jar and slathering some on a piece of bread.

"I’m Phoenix," she said, working on her sandwich too. We switched, her giving me the peanut butter, and I gave her the jelly.

"I dunno why I’m here…" I said, low enough so Caleb couldn’t hear.

"Well, I don’t either…so we’re facing the same problem." She said, an agitated tone in her voice. "We’re going to have to have a family meeting…" she said, loud enough for Caleb to hear over the music. I saw him nod out of the corner of my eye, and he walked past the island, where Phoenix handed him the sandwich she’d just made, and he continued walking out, turning down a dark hallway. Right before he turned the corner, I saw him take a bite out of the sandwich.

"Am I invited to this meeting?" I asked around my sandwich. Phoenix picked up her own and took a bite out of it, leaning against the counter. The girl finished hers and ran into the living room, following the path of her brother-I guessed-leaving us alone.

"Yeah, since you’re why I need to talk to him."

"Well, just so you know, I have no clue why I’m here…the last thing I remember was him hitting me in the head."

Phoenix raised a brow, grinning. She crossed her arms, sandwich gone, and grinned, "I haven’t seen him do something like that in a while…"

I grinned. "When are we gonna have this family meeting?" I asked, curious. Phoenix grinned wider, coming forward, and looped an arm in mine.

"Right now" she said, and dragged me down that same hallway Caleb had went into just minutes before….

In the next chapter, which will definitely be longer, we'll talk about several questions that are probably swimming about in your heads at this very moment....
