Caleb brings Laine to his house.....
Trapped in Venice Chapter 4
Chapter 4

I sighed, lifting the woman off of the bed, carrying her bridal style through the doorway and to the back of the dark building, where my car was located. Ryan didn’t know what he was doing; the last thing I needed in my life was another woman. I struggled to open the door, her still in my arms, and finally accomplished the feat, carefully setting her down in the passenger seat. I closed the door, walking around the front of the car to the drivers’ side. I cranked the car, wincing at the noise, hoping she wouldn’t wake up. She didn’t, so I continued my drive home.

I arrived shortly to my large house located on the outskirts of the city. It was very dark by now, a black blanket pulled over the night sky. I got out of the car and walked around, opening the passenger door and lifting her up carefully. She barely stirred. She sighed, asleep now instead of just knocked out, and moved herself into a more comfortable position in my arms. I tried not to remember. I really did. The memory was just…overwhelming.

I carried my wife into our new house. My parents had gifted it to us as a wedding present, two rooms with one and a half bathrooms. The smaller bedroom was just big enough for us to be able to make our small family together…we laughed to each other, imagining our little family growing in this house. This house. We would make it a home.

I shook the memory away, the wonderful memory bringing unsettling thoughts to my mind. I looked down to the woman in my arms. She wasn’t her. I couldn’t allow myself to remember…

I shuddered, jostling her in my arms, and her head rolled over to rest on my shoulder. I sighed, bringing her to the door with me, unlocking it quietly, and bringing her in. The house was quiet, and all sounds seemed to echo in the empty rooms. I locked the door behind me, somehow accomplishing all of this with her in my arms. I began to wonder her name….I couldn’t identify her with pronouns at all times.

I dismissed that quick thought, and walked quietly down the hallway to the master bedroom. I shut the door quietly behind me, and laid her on the bed, going to the other side of it, pulling the blankets and sheets back, then went back to her. I pulled off her shoes, then picked her up, bringing her to the other side, tucking her into the bed. She rolled over in her sleep, and I walked over to the couch near the window. I’d sleep there tonight.

As I sat on the couch, I pulled the blanket from the back, and laid back, pulling it on top of me. Hopefully I’d wake up before she did.

I woke up, comfortable in a fluffy bed, warm. Then I leapt up, startled. How’d I get here? I didn’t remember anything further from…I gaped. He’d hit me in the head! With a knife! I suppressed a growl.

I looked about the room, taking in the surroundings. It was a big room, with nice furniture. The sun was coming through the windows brightly, and surprisingly, I didn’t have a headache. I laughed to myself. The one time I actually get hit in the head, I don’t have a headache. I saw a couch near one of the far windows, a man sitting on it. The strange thing: the only thing he was wearing was a pair of white pants. Another strange thing: he was gazing intently on me.

I snapped myself out of it. How, I don’t know. He had such dark hair…tan skin…and the expression in his eyes… I shook my head. "Who are you?" I managed to ask.

"I’m Caleb. I rescued you from that invader last night, and brought you here." He said, still giving me that same expression. I scooted back on the bed, drawing my knees close to my chest, holding onto my legs.

"Thankyou." I said quietly.

He grinned. "Would you like to tell me your name?"

I laughed to myself. "I’m Laine." I said, voice light.

"Nice to meet you," he said, slight grin still on his face. "Would you like some breakfast?"

I nodded, and he stood, walking towards the bedroom door. He looked back at me expectantly. I rolled my eyes, and got out of the bed, meeting him at the door, and he brought me to the kitchen.
