Chapter 3

I woke up, light sifting through the curtains, and squinted at the sun. Of course, it hadn’t even been dark when I’d gotten here, so it was still daylight after my 4-hour nap. I yawned, and looked around my room. My bags were still packed, stacked by my bed. I looked at my knapsack, lying by the bags. From the noise of the bustling streets, and the awesome bag, I just couldn’t help it but want to go exploring around Venice.

I tossed some energy bars, a bottle of water, and a change of clothes along with some money into the bag. I changed into some pants my mom had got me. Honestly, I preferred some loose cargo pants to these tight jeans, but if I didn’t wear them, she might never let me leave the hotel. The shirt I was wearing was bright red, yet dark, and it was cut low. I slipped on some low black heels, and with the outfit complete, I deemed myself worthy of going to my mom, and telling her I’d be going out.

I walked out of my room and across the sitting room of the huge suite to my parent’s room. I knocked on the door, and my mom, with her perfect hair, opened the door and answered, "Yes?"

"I’m going out, OK, mom? I’ll be back later." I said with a sure voice. Her eyes swept my figure in approval of my clothing, and nodded.

"OK. Just be back before two AM," she said, and smiled, shutting the door.

What’d she expect me to be doing, going clubbing? Not a bad idea…

I went to the elevator, waited for all of two seconds, and gave up, going for the stairs. I took them at a run, and the bellman looked at me with a perplexed expression on his face. I grinned, and walked out of the building, turning to the right, not even caring where I was going, ready to take it all in.

The sun set faster than I thought it would. Walking down the darkened streets, I was shocked at how many people were on the streets. Soon, though, as if by a cold wind, the people were swept away…leaving just a cool, empty void. I shivered, as if by reflex, and turned onto a dark street…the street lights flickered, and then went out. I heard a garbage can fall, a cat meow, then hiss. I was jumping at every little thing…then I heard something come up behind me…something running up to me. I turned, seeing a dark figure with red eyes. I paused for a second, and saw the face of it…it was a man. Beautiful, in his own way, face all sharp angles, eyes dark amber with blue beneath. I saw a lock of blond hair fall into his forehead before I realized that he was a threat, and I should run. And I did.

I turned, heart beating quickly in my ears, and ran down the alleyway. The man’s quick footsteps followed mine, and I was surprised I could run this fast in heels. Our footsteps echoed on the cobble stoned streets. The streets were getting darker and darker, both from the retreating sun and the buildings growing taller. The streetlights went out with a flicker, leaving me in the darkness, accompanied only by the moon and the monster chasing me.

He was getting closer and closer, and I was overcome with a feeling of fear. I looked ahead of me, and saw that the alleyway was ending. Heart in my throat, I froze and looked up. There he was. The man from my dream.

"What are you doing here?" he asked. "Get out. Now." He said, and the same thing he’d done in the dream, he did now. He sighed, defeated, and reached down, and grabbing my wrists, lifting me up onto the balcony. I stepped over the fence with my left foot, but with my right, I tripped…right into his arms.
