***Chapter 22***
"Mom, not now." Liam said.
Liam's mom put her perfectly manicured hands on her hips. "Umm. Yes, NOW. I want to know what exactly is going on."
Liam groaned. "This is Ella. We're in a bit of a...situation."
The police officer was still standing expectantly. "What kind of situation?" He prompted.
I took action. "Look, this is an emergency. Can you please take us to my parents' house and...we'll explain on the way?"
"My son is not going anywhere until someone explains what exactly is happening right now." Liam's mom stepped in.
"Look, both of you!" Liam began yelling. "This girl was kidnapped a couple years ago by the guy who lives behind this house! He did horrible things to her, and now he's driven somewhere. Ella" - he points to me - "thinks that he went to her house, because he threatened to do so if she ever disobeyed him. Can we please go NOW?"
Liam's mom looked confused. The policeman was looking very doubtful. Precious seconds were ticking away. I was getting desperate. My house was a 45-minute drive away. Austin would be there very soon, and who knows what. I just wanted to jump in that cruiser with Liam and get there, before something happened.
"Liam, is this one of those pranks again? Like when you had to go save Steven because he was supposedly...."
"Mom, I'm telling the truth. I met this girl a couple of weeks ago and she's never been outside and I even went inside the house and the dude told me to go in her room, I had one hour, and he lets other guys do that to her like every day, he abuses her, her parents don't know where she is..."
Liam's mom's face paled. "Is that true?" she asked me gently.
I clutched Liam's hand tightly. "Yes," I croaked.
"Oh dear Lord, then get going!" she cried, then turned. "Officer, do something!"
The officer still didn't look convinced. "You know kids, we help people with REAL emergencies"
Liam took off towards the cruiser, apparently thinking the same thing I had been. He jumped into the driver's seat. The keys were still in the ignition. Tsk, tsk; what an irresponsible police officer.
"HEY!" The policeman started racing towards the car on his short pudgy legs. "WAIT! That is a vehicle belonging to the state! You're unauthorized to drive it! I could have you arrested! I-"
Liam started the car, drowning out the guy's words. He turned on the sirens and pressed the pedal to the floor. We zoomed off with the police officer slamming the passenger window, which I was sitting in. I looked passed him just before we turned to corner. Liam's mom was yelling something as well. I hoped that if everything turned out okay, I would be able to more thoroughly explain everything to her. She seemed like such a nice woman.
The advantages of being in a screaming cruiser was that everybody gets out of your way, and you can drive as fast as you please. I just hoped that nobody looked close enough to see that it was in the hands of two teenagers.
"Do you even have your license with you?" I asked Liam.
He put on a tight smile. "Nope."
"Liam, I'm really sorry." I said. "Wait, go on this exit." How I remembered the way to my house from Austin's was a miracle. "Go faster on the highway."
Liam sped up and turned. "Why?"
"Because that's the way."
"No. I mean, why are you sorry?"
"Because, look at you. You just stole a cruiser and are illegally racing down the road, going somewhere unknown, for me."
Liam turned his face to mine for a moment. "Of course I'm doing this. I WANT to be doing this." He turned his gaze back to the road, but kept talking. "Ella. I really care about you. And I saw what he did to you. You act so guarded, so scared, so fragile, even when I first met you. If I wasn't helping you right now..." He trailed off. "You deserve to be helped. I can't imagine what life would be like if you were still with that creep."
"He'd probably get rid of me."
"What?"
"I'm getting too old. And he saw that I've started rebelling. I'm not as scared and obedient as I first was. And it's because of you." I smile at him.
"How long were you with him?"
"Two years." It seems like eternity now. "I thought about my family every day though. I wonder if they still remember me, or have any hope that I'm okay."
"Of course they still remember you. And I'm sure that they'd never stop hoping." His voice is soft and comforting, and I know now how much he really does care about me. I could never wish for a more... simply perfect guy. He makes me feel like I'm actually worth something, and I hadn't felt that in a long time. He fulfilled me with what I had been lacking for two years now. Happiness. Love. Hope.
We drive the remaining half hour in silence, except for me directing him where to turn. He's holding my hand, some country song is quietly wailing from the radio. And then we reach the entrance to where my subdivision starts.
