Transformed - 12: Proposal and Refusal

Sorry for keeping you waiting and then posting a dumb chapter. The best part (I hope) will come soon, I promise. Please bear me and don't forget 15 comments. This is not Rehan's Pov. I will post it soon next to next chapter.
I woke up to the sound of screaming.
Well, I didn't wake up, since I couldn't sleep, but I had kind of drifted to dreamland, where I was with Rehan and we were together and then this screaming jolted me back to reality.
I didn't even have to look to see it was. Mom. And the reason why?
Another marriage proposal, apparently.

I dragged myself downstairs to find mom and my next door friend Bushra squealing excitedly at something. "Mom?" I whispered.
Mom looked at me and smiled. "Finally you are awake. Come here, I've got something for you."
I stared at what looked like a stack of envelopes and groaned. No way. I thought puking like a maniac would keep proposals away.
I was wrong, it seemed. Bushra looked at me and gave me a wink that said,"Don't worry, I'll help you out of this."

In our community, there was this traditional way to propose to a girl. Sending a photograph of a guy with his personal details. The girl's family would then RSVP yes or no. Well, people also came to look, but this was the preferred method.

"Arshad Taher, 23 years, working as a web developer, five feet ten. What do you think?" mom read the details of idiot number one.
"Isn't he the one who was caught messing around with a skunk?" I replied sweetly.
Mom scowled at me and opened the next envelope.
"Wahid Ali is 22 years old, recently graduated in BA and is looking for a job and a wife. Fair skin, five feet six. How about him?" mom asked me, handing a picture.
I groaned as I stared at Wahid's picture. He was normal looking and all, but I wasn't interested in him. I shook my head. Mom glared at me. "Why not?" she asked.

I sighed. "Mom, I don't want to marry now. I want to study further and get a career for myself."
"You are a girl. Girls don't go for jobs or careers. It is men's job to work and earn money. Your job is as a housewife."
Bushra, helpfully went, "Isn't Wahid Ali, the guy who was rumored to be drunk one night at college and went around town wearing nothing but his underwear?"
Mom and I exchanged glances. Then she muttered, "No Wahid."
I grinned at Bushra. Maybe having her around was not bad after all. She seemed to know everything that happened in town. I wondered what her sources were.

Mom pulled out another picture of a guy and read,"Mohd Imran, aged 21, still in college third year, studying for CA. Five feet seven." She looked at me. I shook my head.
"Why not?"
"Because mom, look at him. He looks as if he has never bathed in his entire life. He looks disgusting."

Mom sighed. She opened another envelope. "Shahid Hasan, 23, working in Danish Hotel, five feet."
Dad who had just entered the room, snorted. "Five feet. Get real, Rumana is five feet six."
I noticed that there were about five envelopes left. I quickly stole three when no one noticed and tore them into minute pieces. Good. Three idiots out.
"And he works in a hotel." Dad was saying, "As what?"
"He is a waiter, from what I heard." Bushra muttered.
"A waiter? You want to get your daughter married to a waiter?" dad was almost yelling at mom.

"I didn't know it, okay? And anyway, it wasn't as if I were going to do anything!" mom yelled back.
Great. They were fighting now. Time to leave. Bushra also got the same impression. She grinned at me.
"Thanks for everything." I said to her as we left the room.
"Don't mention it. I know you don't want to get married. Honestly, I don't think anyone here is going to be good enough for you. This town is full of jerk heads."

"We are going shopping, Rumana." mom said to me. It was three in the afternoon. "I'm not coming, I will take care of Aqsa." I replied.
"No, I want you to come with me."
"Me?" I asked.
"Yes you. Get dressed up. And don't bother with the veil."
I looked at her, surprised. She always made sure I wore the veil. I hadn't gone anywhere without it ever since I turned fourteen. What was with the no-veil act?

I found out as soon as we reached the mall.
