Training an older dog does not differ much different than standard obedience training.

However, it can be a bit more time consuming.

I have successfully used these two secrets to train my older dog and now I am going to share these secrets with you.

Training Older Dog Secret #1:
Make sure that you are using positive reinforcement all the way through the training. You can use treats and rewards to reward your older dog when it does something correctly - what you have been trying to train it to do.

Do not yell or hit your dog during the training Dogs are a lot like children, and they want to please their owner. Using fear as a form of training will not be successful.

Training Older Dog Secret #2:
Make sure that you take into consideration the age of the dog. Set tasks that take into account the physical limitations that your dog may be experiencing. Be aware of their limitations and be patient and understanding.

One of the most rewarding things about training an older dog is the bonding time that it gives you and your pet. A lot of times, older dogs aren’t as active as when they were puppies, and thus may not get as much opportunity to play and interact with you.

This type of interactive training will provide plenty of enjoyment for your dog.
