Top 10 Smartest Dogs
Think only humans and monkeys are intelligent and smart? Here's a list of the top 10 smartest dogs in the world. Wondering whether your dog is in the list or not? Why don't you check it out for yourself? Read on...

Smart Dogs in the World
Not all dogs are Snowy (remember the snow white dog from Tintin?) and not all dogs are Odie (the dog from the comic strip, Garfield). There are dogs who are smarter than the others while some who are not that smart. Here's a list of the top 10 smartest dog breeds.
#1 Border Collie
The dog which tops the list is the Border Collie, herding dogs from Great Britain. So high is their energy level as well as their level of intelligence, that if you do not keep them occupied all day long, they are not happy. They love to be with people who too are hardworking and full of energy (so be careful when you are just lazing around and you have a border collie in the house). They love to learn new tricks and it goes without saying that they learn pretty fast. They, like other dogs, make good companions, provided you keep them busy.
#2 Poodle
The intelligence of the Poodle tells you, or rather warns you that one should never judge by size. They are small and they can easily be carried around (and look rather fashionable too), but they are the second most smartest dogs in the world. These dogs are usually trained to hunt, to be good guard dogs and also rescue dogs. They have a sharp mind and are very good swimmers. If their intelligence as well as energy is not put to proper use, then they might use it to destroy your property. So, careful!
#3 German Shepherd
The dog which ranks third in the list is the German Shepherd. They are smart, loyal, protective, dependable and courageous and always eager to learn new things. I am sure you must have seen these dogs used in the police forces. Besides this, they also make extremely good guard dogs. The military also uses them for parachute jumps. It's easy to teach them tricks also to train them as they are eager to learn more and very obedient.
#4 Golden Retriever
The Golden retrievers are the next on the list of smartest dogs. They are loving, loyal, obedient, great with children and also make good hunting as well as guard dogs. If you are looking for a great pet, then I would suggest that you get a Golden retriever. They really make good companions and they are also easy to train.
#5 Doberman Pinscher
The Doberman Pinscher are fearless and have a high stamina level. Although some of you might say that these dogs are scary, I would say that they are not. If you know them well, then you will see that they are very gentle. But despite that they make the best guard dogs. If you are looking for a dog that is loyal, loving but at the same time ferocious (when the time comes) then this is the dog for you.
#6 Shetland Sheepdog
The sixth dog in the list is the Shetland Sheepdogs. These dogs were bred in order to herd the flock of sheep of the Shetland Islands. They are good to help keep other animals out of the farm or garden and they too make good guard dogs.
#7 Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retrievers are the seventh smartest, as well as the most popular dogs in the world. These dogs come from Newfoundland and they were mainly trained to hunt small birds and animals. They are also used by the police as sniffer dogs and also to guide the blind people.
#8 Papillon
They might look dumb, but do not go by appearances. These dogs are cute, tough, strong and smarter than several other dogs. They not only make good watchdogs, but they are also great companions to have. They are also very protective and are also considered to be 'symbol of elegance' (no wonder they were so popular in the royal courts during the Renaissance period).
#9 Rottweiler
Rottweilers originated in Germany and were very popular in the ancient Roman Empire. They can easily take down a human, and are ferocious and good guard dogs as well as herding dogs, but at the same time they are very loyal and no matter what, they will never leave their master's side. A very good dog to have as a companion.
#10 Australian Cattle Dog
Last, but not the least, Australian Cattle dogs are the final ones in the list of smartest dogs in the world. As the name suggest, they make good herding dogs because of their alertness, intelligence as well as loyalty. These dogs can be trained easily and they love learning new things everyday.
If your dog's breed is not mentioned in this list, then do not worry. Intelligent or not, we love them as they are. What matters most is that they be happy and that they be with us as our true friends for a long time.
