Top Ten Things You Should Do Before Moving

Moving house is a great opportunity to get your life and your belongings in order, and here are our Top Ten recommendations for what you can do to achieve that!

1. Start sifting through all your belongings several months before you move house – the earlier the better so that you have plenty of time to make decisions on what you would like to keep and what you don’t need any more.
2. Once you’ve had a chance to sort through your belongings, and decided what you’re keeping and what you’re not, arrange to have a garage sale or a yard sale so that you can sell anything worth selling. The money will come in real handy to help pay for your moving costs!
3. Anything that doesn’t sell at your yard sale can be offered to charitable organizations. There’s all sorts of items that they might like to take, so offer to them first before simply throwing out or ask friends or neighbors if there’s anything they would like.
4. When you’re sorting through your belongings this is a great time to make an inventory of everything you’re keeping. Not only will it help when it comes to packing, but it’s a very useful list to keep for insurance purposes.
5. It’s best not to take full stocks of food with you when you move house, after all, they will have grocery stores where you’re moving to! Remember that your moving company charge you by weight so start running down your food stocks a month or so in advance so that you only have a few essentials left when you come to move.
6. Following on from the above point, this is a good time to check what food you have in your kitchen and make a list. Stick the list on your fridge door and check off each item as it’s used so that you can keep track of how much you’re using and plan your meals ahead!
7. If you’re moving long distance and leaving behind friends and family, try to arrange a leaving party. This is a great opportunity to get together with people, and gives both you and them a chance to say farewell! Maybe you could use up some more of your food stocks as well!!
8. Now’s the perfect time to visit all those places in your city or state that you meant to visit years ago! Have a couple of days out and try to visit the ones you’re most keen on.
9. Moving companies aren’t allowed to ship any dangerous or flammable goods so you should plan in advance what you will do with these things. This includes the gas in your mower, which should be drained and a whole host of other household items. Why not give them to a neighbor or find out from where you can safely dispose of them.
10. This final point is something that you should do leading up to your moving day and finish on the actual day – thoroughly clean your house! You have a responsibility to leave the house in a reasonable state anyway, and it’s only good manners to leave the house nice and clean for the next owners. As a little extra something why not leave a card and a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine to welcome the new owners to their new home!
