Tonsil Cancer Symptoms

Tonsil cancer symptoms could be many, and are prominent enough for the sufferer to suspect that something might be amiss in his body.
Tonsil cancer may also be referred to as the condition of throat cancer. Clinically, it is known as oropharynx cancer. According to reports, in the United Sates, there are about 8,000 people who turn up to be the sufferers of tonsil cancer. More cases of men suffering from this disease come up as compared to those in women. The factor that is associated with it could be the heavy use of nicotine and alcoholic beverages.

What Indicates Tonsil Cancer?

The nature of the symptoms depend upon the stage of the cancer. Though the symptoms themselves won't differ, their intensity may. Some most common symptoms may include:
  • As the cancer develops in an area of the throat that just lies behind the mouth, some of the most prominent symptoms are manifested in the mouth. These may include a persistent soreness in the throat, presence of blood in saliva, loss of taste, difficulty in chewing, jaw pain while speaking and foul breath.
  • The symptoms do not just limit them to the mouth. They can show up in the form of problems in the neck area too. For instance, some people may have swelling in the neck, or may feel the formation of lumps in the area. Neck pain may be a common occurrence too.
  • As the cancer occurs in the throat region, it is obvious that the symptoms would affect the throat as well. That is the reason most people experience sore throat, and ulcers that won't heal. Difficulty in swallowing food may also occur.
  • Most diseases of the throat are known to affect the ear too. So the other symptoms that may indicate tonsil cancer may include hearing difficulty, tinnitus (a sensation of ringing in the ears), severe earache, etc.
  • Other abnormal symptoms which may be indicative of this condition are unintended weight loss, and intolerance symptoms towards citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, etc.
Treatment

A lot of factors influence the nature or course of the treatment. These include the location of the tonsil cancer, the types of cells affected, the stage of the condition and the overall health of the person in concern. Keeping all such factors in mind, doctors go for:
  • Radiation therapy (makes uses of high-energy particles to destroy the cancer cells, usually opted for an early-stage cancer)
  • Surgery (which might involve removing the cancerous lymph nodes, getting rid of all or a part of the throat,or the voice box)
  • Chemotherapy
The symptoms, as described above, are too prominent to keep the sufferer unaware that he might be suffering from something serious. So, at the slightest hint of any of these symptoms, especially when they tend to persist or become intense with time, the only step that has to be taken is towards a doctor's clinic. There is no proven way to prevent this disease, as its specific causes are not known. However, according to doctors, people can still reduce the possibilities of it developing, by making some wise decisions in their lives. These may include shunning smoking, keeping alcohol consumption to a moderate level, keeping a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, and being cautious against hazardous chemicals.

Cancer is such a disease, which when diagnosed and treated early, leaves high scope for the sufferer to survive it. Otherwise, with time, it keeps on getting worse till a point, where it becomes irreversible. So pay heed to symptoms such as the ones mentioned above, and take measures when you still have the time. Take care!
