Tonight

About someone with a terminal illness who is about to die…
You can hear my heartbeat,
But not for very long.
As you lie down next to me,
And sing me one last song.
Your breath is soft on my cheek,
You hold my hand like it could save my life.
You wish I could stay one more week,
You’ve helped me through good times and strife.
I smile as I breathe my last breath,
And look into your weeping eyes,
And I say ‘I’m not afraid of death’,
And as my heart stops and everyone cries,
And as the monitor flatlines,
A part of you died tonight.
