Toenail Fungus Treatment Over the Counter

Toenail fungus can not only be an unsightly condition but a painful one as well. This article speaks of the treatment of toenail fungus over-the-counter.
The first symptom of a toenail fungus is the appearance of a white or yellow spot under the tip of the toenail. The infection does not limit only to the toenail and can infect the rest of the nails, as well. When left untreated, the infection has a tendency to spread to more depths in the affected nail. This in turn, gives rise to more symptoms such as discoloration and thickening of the nail and development of crumbling edges. Not only the toenail problem is painful, but is also an unpleasant sight. This kind of infection is not an easy one to treat and deal with. There is always a risk of recurrence. However, proper and timely usage of medications help in clearing up the fungus.

Over-the-Counter Medicines

There are various over-the-counter antifungals that can be used to treat toenail fungus. Common examples include names like ZetaClear, Nail Rx, Lamisil and Vinegar ACV. To make these medicines more effective, here are some self-care measures that can be followed at home.

The treatment must begin with a proper filing of the infected nail. The infections cause the nail to grow thicker rather than growing longer. So, if your toenail happens to be full of such thick layers, then it's time for you to start working to file the nail down as thin as possible. However, take care that you do not injure the flesh underneath. Once the filing is over, your nail should feel softer than before.

Now, soak your feet in a solution of warm water and vinegar in equal proportion. Do this for about 20 minutes. It would help soften the nail further. Do not ignore the need to dry the feet thoroughly. Having done this, trim the nail short. Do it with a new fingernail clipper and do not use it for healthier nails. Trimming the nail short is an important step in over the counter nail fungus treatment. This is because, a shorter nail would allow the medication to reach the infection better.

Now you can use the over-the-counter antifungal nail creams and ointments which you have purchased. Ensure that the medication is specially formulated for toenails or feet. Apply the medication twice a day. A couple of weeks later, you should notice the tip of your affected toenail taking on a pink color; a sign of recuperation.

Home Remedies

Use of tea tree oil is known to be an age-old remedy for toenail fungus. Get a cotton ball and dip it in the oil. Rub the affected nail in the morning and before retiring to bed. Then comes the use of Listerine. Simply soak the feet in it for 20 minutes twice a day. For some people, rubbing alcohol has been one of the best toenail fungus treatment. Soaking the feet in it for 15-20 minutes, 2-3 times a day, gives appreciable results in healing the infection.

Over-the-counter medicines may help you treat the problem of toenail fungus and save you a great deal of money. However, in most cases you may realize that they are not so effective as they should be. So, if you notice that these medications are not helping you even after repeated attempts, then you should consider paying a visit to a professional. Delay and hesitation would only worsen the problem.
