Tips to Stay Awake

Some tips to stay awake can range from the traditional method of splashing cold water on face to keeping a squawking toy around which makes noise whenever you doze and lean to one side.
There are a few simple things that you could do to stay awake and complete the work at hand. Working against your body isn't easy, especially if your body is asking for rest, tiredness is something that will over power all your intentions of working, studying, etc. To stay awake you need to understand the concept of sleep, our body and mind need rest to recuperate and sleep is the answer to this situation. So if you do things that will help your body and mind recuperate, you stand a chance of staying awake. Here are a few tips for staying awake.

Use Water
One of the oldest tips is splashing your face with cold water and freshening up to stay awake. A way to do this is cup your palms and put them together and collect water in them. Now immerse one eye at a time in the cupped hands and open and shut the eyelids a few times, repeat the action with the other eye. Remember to dry your eyes with a soft cloth.

Drinking cold water is also a good remedy against sleep, cold water in the system will wake you up and will also stimulate your bowel. This will keep you awake with frequent trips to the bathroom. If you want to avoid the inconvenience there is other stuff you could try. Soak strips of cloth in ice-cold water and apply them to your forehead at regular intervals. Don't overdo this, you might catch cold.

Light Snacks
It might sound strange but eating a little at regular intervals will help you in staying awake and will also give you energy to complete your work. The ideal thing to do will be to prepare the snack when you are feeling sleepy, the moving around will help the blood circulation and assist you in staying awake. The trick here is to eat a very light snack otherwise you might doze off if you eat a heavy one.

Drink Coffee
One of the most reliable tips for staying awake is drinking coffee in moderation. Coffee is a stimulant which will energize you and help you stay awake. Chemicals in coffee trigger the neurotransmitter in the brain and help us stay awake. There are different variants of coffee that you could try to suit your taste buds, one option is to have black coffee with lemon.

Exercise
Try exercising to rid muscle soreness and tiredness. This doesn't mean you start lifting heavy weights, just do some light stretching and walk around a bit. Few other things you could do is extend your arms in front of you and rotate your wrists. Turn your neck to the left first and then to the right to get rid of the stiffness. Prop your back against the wall and lift your left knee towards your chest, go as high as possible and hold the position for 5 counts. Repeat the motion with the right knee.

Gossip!
Wondering how to stay awake at work, the easiest thing is to talk about some office gossip. This will excite you and your brain will work in overdrive! Talking to friends is a great way to get rid of your tiredness and this will also help relax your mind. Don't go into the listening mode, you do the talking if you want to stay awake. This is one of the easiest tips for staying awake.

Laughter
One of the fun ways to stay awake all night is to read jokes at regular intervals and laugh your way through your work. Laughter is the best medicine and it also works effectively against sleep. If you have friends or colleagues around share a joke or two with them. Laughter releases certain chemicals in the brain that stimulate you, this will help you stay awake longer.

While You Drive...
Try and have other people in the car. Some of the other tips are listening to music that will excite you and get your adrenalin pumping. You can also take regular pit stops and walk around a bit.

Other tips to stay awake are having energy drinks and cold sodas to vitalize you as the cold drinks will also give you a jolt of energy. If you are at home and struggling to keep your eyes open, take a cold shower and if the weather conditions don't permit a cold shower take one with lukewarm water. Chewing gum is also one of the remedies that has worked for many people in their efforts to stay awake. Try any one of these remedies and if that doesn't work try another. At least all this trying will keep you awake!
