When you leave your apartment home make sure you flip the lights off, turn off the television, and close the refrigerator door. So many of us turn on lights and electronic equipment when we enter a room. Many times this is just habit. We don’t necessarily need the light on in every room of the house. Try rolling up your blinds and using the sunlight when possible.
Our current incandescent lights we normally have installed in our apartments and homes are not very efficient. Purchase fluorescent bulbs. They may cost a little up front money, but over the long haul they will last longer and we will save more money.
Avoid purchasing and using plastic bags if you can help it. These bags are one of the worst items that we use environmentally. We just throw them away after they are full. Learn to line a small bin with them or use them to take your lunch with you. Bottom line, don't overuse them.
Lots of times consignment shops and stores will have items that can be re-used. That way we don’t have to keep purchasing products from our normal stores. Re-using items prevents us from creating more trash.
Water is fast becoming our most important and valuable resource. Saving water actually saves energy. This is on of the best ways to "Go Green" in your apartment home. Low flush toilets will use let water and operate just as efficiently. Turn water off when brushing your teeth. How many of us just let the water run? Start timing your showers. Most people only need 5 minutes for so to clean themselves and scrub. Try and avoid using hot water when you do your laundry. Cold water works great.
