Tips On Using Color With Your Home Decor

Want to know how to use color in your home decor for stunning effect? Then find out right here in this article.
There are many aspects to home decorating including your walls, furniture, floor coverings as well as many miscellaneous items. In order for each of these things to complement each other, you have to have the correct color combinations. Color is probably the most important part of home decorating. When decorating with color, remember to use a few guidelines, but also some intuition as well. After all, colors affect mood and feeling, and so see which colors and ideas resonate best with you. Here are some top tips on how to use color in interior decor:

1. Choose colors that will suit the style of decor you're creating

If you're going with a specific style of decor in your home, it's important that you use colors that compliment this style. For instance, if your choice of style is elegant French, you're best staying with neutral or rich color, but not bold or trendy combinations. Regardless of which style you're hoping to achieve, this tip should be kept in mind for the best color schemes.

2. Consider the patterns in the room when choosing colors

Choose a pattern to work with your color. Every room will have some sort of pattern, whether it's based off a piece of furniture, a bedspread, floor rug or large picture. You'll have a much easier time starting with a pattern then trying to blend that pattern into a specific color scheme afterwards. The colors that are in your pattern will help to determine the other colors you'll use in the room. Your room will consist of three different colors: a light color, a dark color and a medium tone color. These three different colors are what make up your color scheme.

3. Use a light color as a basis of the entire room

The light colors often works best as your background in the room. Whatever light color you choose will be what your walls and floors will be. You may wish to tone it down with a little white if the background seems too vivid and bold. Although both your walls and floors will have the light color, the floor should be a little bit darker than the walls to help ground the room.

4. Use a medium color in moderation

The next largest areas in the room will be a medium tone color. Your large furniture pieces or window coverings should be the medium tone in your room. If these pieces also have a touch of the background color mixed in, that will look even better. The key here is to see if the light and medium colors will go well together and not have one overpower the other.

5. Use darker colors as accents to highlight the room

The darker colors will be for the accents in the room as well as any smaller pieces. These help to give the room some extra sparkle and should be evenly spaced throughout the room. The creation of a harmonious room is being able to appropriately blend these three colors. Although the darker colors will catch your eyes quicker, the room, as a whole, will be perfectly coordinated if you mix them in evenly.

So there you have it.

You now have some ideas on how to use color when creating the look and feel you want in your home decor. If you have doubts about some of the color schemes you've chosen, bring some samples home and compare them. Sometimes, you really won't know how colors will work together until you put them beside one another and in your own home as well. Choose a final color scheme when you're sure you have what you like. Remember that your aim is to find a color combination that you enjoy, and feel wonderful in. So do some experimenting and you'll soon find the color scheme that you're looking for.
