Tips on How to Lay Hardwood Flooring

These days, hardwood flooring is popular in many homes. Those who want to get rid of old carpeting, choose to have hardwood flooring installed to give rooms that classic, regal look. If you are on a budget, you will be able to install the flooring yourself. While this may seem difficult, if you follow some simple tips, you will be able to do this in any room of your home.
Before you embark on this diy project, you should get rid of old flooring. Once this is done, you should prepare the floor by sweeping and vacuuming it to make sure that there aren’t any pieces of dirt or carpeting left on the floor. This could cause you to lay the flooring unevenly. Measuring the room to see how much flooring you will need to order is the next step.

Removing base boards from the room is the last preparatory step you will have to take. You can replace them later on or if you are installing vapour barriers, you should do so at this point. Overlapping barriers will prevent moisture from ruining your flooring over time. Glue barriers into place and insert spacers to keep the flooring from expanding and contracting.

Once your new hardwood flooring has arrived, you should let it sit in the room for a few days to give it time to expand and adapt to the temperature in the room. If you lay the flooring immediately after it is delivered, it will expand and cause the flooring to become uneven. This could cause warping later on.

Having the right tools for this job is important. Chalk line, pneumatic nailer, nails, hammer, and cloths will help you complete your job faster and make sure that you are laying the flooring correctly. You should begin by laying pieces into doorways and working from there. If you do not want to spend time cutting and fitting pieces, buy flooring that interlocks. This will save you time.

Positioning Your Flooring

While many people will say that you should lay your hardwood flooring parallel to the longest wall in the room, there are many designs you can choose from depending on your experience laying flooring and your dedication to the project.

If this is your first floor laying project, then you should choose the easiest way so that the floor will turn out the way your want it to. Since flooring can be expensive, making too many mistakes will cost you money.

The best rule to follow is to make sure that your flooring is straight at all times. Using a chalk line will help you achieve a straight line at all times. Marking your floor by sections will allow you to follow the line easily.

After you are finished, you will have to let the flooring sit for a day or two before you can walk on it unless you have used interlocking floor pieces. You can, however, walk on the floor and pick up any stray nails and make sure that all nails are in place.

Installing Hardwood Flooring
Installing hardwood flooring can take place in several ways depending on the type of hardwood flooring that you have.

Professional Hardwood Floor Installation
Although there are some very simple interlocking flooring kits that you can get to help you with the do it yourself type of installation (especially if you are installing a floating floor) you do need to have some skills before you install the floor.
